Around the Capital — 11 Prefecture-Level Cities
Hebei Province (河北省) completely surrounds Beijing and Tianjin, making it the gateway to China's capital region. Despite being overshadowed by its famous neighbors, Hebei is home to extraordinary attractions including the magnificent Mountain Resort in Chengde — a vast imperial retreat with replicas of China's most famous landscapes, built by the Qing emperors as their summer capital. The province also boasts the eastern section of the Great Wall at Shanhaiguan (the "First Pass Under Heaven"), the stunning Baiyangdian Lake wetland (the largest freshwater lake in North China), and the Zhaozhou Bridge (built 595–605 CE — the world's oldest open-spandrel stone arch bridge). Hebei is also the birthplace of Zhao Yun (赵云), the legendary Three Kingdoms period general, and the site of the Xibaiping (西柏坡) — Mao Zedong's last revolutionary base before entering Beijing in 1949. With its imperial heritage, Great Wall sections, wetland landscapes, and proximity to Beijing and Tianjin, Hebei offers travelers a perfect complement to a capital city visit.
High-Speed Rail (CRH) — The best way: Hebei is China's most rail-connected province, with the Beijing–Shanghai, Beijing–Guangzhou, Beijing–Shenyang, and Beijing–Kunming high-speed railways all passing through its territory. From Beijing South Railway Station (北京南站), high-speed trains reach Shijiazhuang (1 hour, ¥128), Baoding (40 minutes, ¥62), Tangshan (1 hour 20 minutes, ¥55), Qinhuangdao (2 hours, ¥83), and Zhangjiakou (50 minutes, ¥91). From Beijing West (北京西站), trains reach Handan (2 hours, ¥152) and Xingtai (1 hour 40 minutes, ¥98). Chengde is reached from Beijing (1 hour 50 minutes, ¥95) via the Beijing–Chengde high-speed railway (opened 2021). Most cities have 20+ daily departures.
Bus network: Hebei's bus network connects all 11 prefecture-level cities and most county towns. From Beijing's Liuliqiao (六里桥) Bus Station, buses depart hourly for cities across Hebei (¥30–120, 2–5 hours). The bus is cheaper than the train but slower — recommended for routes without high-speed rail coverage.
Within cities: Each prefecture-level city has its own bus and taxi system. DiDi is available in all cities. Cities with metro systems: Shijiazhuang (Metro Line 1–3, ¥2–6). Other cities rely on buses (¥1–2 per ride) and taxis (¥5–8 base fare).

The world's oldest open-spandrel stone arch bridge — built 595–605 CE during the Sui Dynasty by master craftsman Li Chun. 50 meters long, 9 meters wide, it pioneered the "open-spandrel" design (openings in the spandrels) that wouldn't appear in European bridge design until the 14th century. ¥40 entry. Near Shijiazhuang.

Free entry (reservation required).
Hebei cuisine (冀菜, Jì Cài) is one of China's major culinary traditions, known for its bold flavors, use of local ingredients, and influence from neighboring Beijing, Shandong, and Shanxi cuisines. Unlike Beijing's refined imperial cuisine, Hebei cooking is hearty and rustic.
