Dajing Gate (大境门, Dàjìngmén, "Great Realm Gate") is one of the Great Wall's most important gates, located in Zhangjiakou city center, built in 1644 CE during the Ming Dynasty's final year (the Chongzhen Emperor's 17th year). The gate is 12 meters high, 9 meters wide, and 8 meters deep, built with local granite blocks, with a 3-bay gatehouse on top (reconstructed 1992). The gate was the northern terminus of the "Zhangku Trade Route" (张库商道, Zhāngkù Shāngdào, "Zhangjiakou–Karakorum Trade Road"), the most important trade route between China and Mongolia/Russia during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). At its peak (1700–1800s), 50,000+ camels and 10,000+ merchants passed through this gate annually, carrying tea, silk, porcelain, and paper from China to Mongolia, and returning with furs, wool, horses, and gold. 🌤️ Seasonal Highlights
🌸 Spring (April–May) — Transition season: melting snow & green grasslands: Spring (5–18°C) is the transition from ski season to grassland season. The Grassland Sky Road opens in May (snow melts, wildflowers begin blooming). The Dajing Gate is less crowded. The Xiaowutai Mountain is still too snowy for summit hikes (snow at 2,000m+ until late May). The best spring activity: Dajing Gate (1–2 hours) + city exploration + Wenhua Night Market. Ski resorts close in mid-March — book ski trips for early March only.
☀️ Summer (June–August) — BEST season for grasslands & hiking: 18–28°C, wildflowers peak: Summer is the ideal time for the Grassland Sky Road (132km, 3–5 hours, June–August — the grass is greenest, wildflowers bloom in the flower meadows). The Xiaowutai Mountain summit hike is best June–August (no snow, stable weather, 12-hour round trip — start at 5:00am). The Xiaowutai alpine meadows are covered in wildflowers (purple aster, blue poppy, 20+ species, peak July). The Dajing Gate is lively with evening lantern shows. The city is pleasantly cool (10–12°C cooler than Beijing). Book farmstays along the Grassland Sky Road in advance (May–August is popular). The best summer strategy: morning Grassland Sky Road drive (6:00–10:00am, best light and coolest) → afternoon farmstay lunch (11:00am–1:00pm) → afternoon Dajing Gate (3:00–5:00pm) → evening Night Market (6:00–9:00pm).
🍂 Autumn (September–October) — Golden grasslands & perfect photography: Autumn (5–18°C) is excellent. The Grassland Sky Road is spectacular from late September to mid-October when the grasslands turn golden, dotted with 200+ wind turbines against clear blue skies — the best photography season. The Xiaowutai Mountain's autumn foliage (birch forests turning yellow and orange) is beautiful in October. The Dajing Gate is at its most photogenic in autumn's golden light. Ski season hasn't started yet — Chongli is quiet. November is the last month for the Grassland Sky Road before snow closes it.
❄️ Winter (November–March) — SKI SEASON: the reason to visit: Winter (-15–0°C) is the BUSIEST season. The Chongli ski resorts are in full operation (November 15–March 15, peak December–February). The 2022 Olympic legacy venues (Snow Ruyi ski jump, Olympic Museum) are open year-round but most spectacular in snow. The Grassland Sky Road is CLOSED (snow and ice, November–April). The Dajing Gate is beautiful in snow (January–February 20–40cm). The Wenhua Night Market is less crowded but warm indoor dining is available. Bring EXTREME winter gear: thermal underwear, fleece, down jacket (rated for -20°C), waterproof ski pants, warm hat, balaclava, insulated gloves. The wind chill at Chongli (2,000m elevation) can feel like -30°C. Ski goggles are essential (not just sunglasses). Book ski resort hotels 2–3 weeks ahead (December–February, prices 50–100% higher).

Day 2: Early morning Grassland Sky Road sunrise (5:30–7:00am) → drive back to Chongli → Olympic Park (2 hours) → afternoon Xiaowutai Mountain (2-hour drive, 4-hour hike at Jinkou Valley) → evening train back to Beijing.
- Recommended 2-day itinerary — "Winter Ski": Day 1: Morning train to Chongli (50 minutes from Beijing) → check into ski resort hotel → afternoon skiing (1:00–5:00pm). Evening: resort dinner + hot springs (¥80–150). Day 2: Full day skiing (8:30am–4:30pm) → afternoon train back to Beijing.
- Ski resort selection guide: 1) Beginners → Secret Garden of Cuiyun (翠云山, ¥300–500/day, gentlest slopes, cheapest). 2) Intermediate → Thaiwoo (太舞, ¥500–700/day, 40+ runs, most variety). 3) Advanced → Wanlong (万龙, ¥580–680/day, biggest vertical drops, North Face black diamonds). 4) Olympic fans → Genting Secret Garden (云顶, ¥600–800/day, actual 2022 Olympic runs). 5) Budget → buy "early bird" tickets on Trip.com (¥300–450/day, book 5 days ahead).
- Grassland Sky Road driving tips: 1) Drive from EAST (Chongli) to WEST (Shangyi) for the most dramatic views. 2) Fill your gas tank BEFORE the road — there are very few gas stations on the 132km route. 3) The road is single lane each way with NO guardrails in many sections — drive carefully, especially on weekends (50+ cars/hour in summer peak). 4) Stop at EVERY 观景台 (viewing platform, 50+ along the route) — each has a different perspective. 5) Bring snacks and 1.5L water per person — no restaurants on the road (only farmstays at the villages midway). 6) The road is NOT suitable for low-clearance sports cars — bring an SUV or sedan with decent ground clearance (some sections are gravel).
- Winter ski gear checklist (DON'T forget): Ski goggles (essential, NOT just sunglasses), waterproof ski jacket and pants, thermal underwear (top and bottom), fleece mid-layer, neck gaiter (not a scarf — scarves can tangle in chairlifts), insulated gloves (not regular winter gloves), ski socks (wool, knee-high). If you don't have gear, rent at the resort: skis + boots + poles ¥150–200/day, jacket + pants ¥100–150/day, goggles ¥30–50/day. The resort rentals are decent quality (2022 Olympics-grade equipment).
- Payment methods: WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted everywhere in Zhangjiakou and at Chongli ski resorts. Carry ¥100–200 cash for farmstays along the Grassland Sky Road (sometimes cash-only). The CRH tickets can be purchased with WeChat/Alipay at the station.
