北京 北京 — China's Capital — Where History Meets Modernity

Beijing (北京) is China's capital and one of the world's great ancient capitals, home to over 21 million people. For over 800 years — first under the Yuan, then Ming and Qing dynasties — Beijing was the political and cultural heart of the Chinese empire. Today, it's a city of dramatic contrasts: the Forbidden City's vermilion walls sit alongside gleaming CBD skyscrapers, and ancient hutong alleys neighbor ultra-modern architecture.

The city is built around the Forbidden City (紫禁城), which served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors from 1420 to 1912. Surrounding it are three concentric 'rings' — the famous ring roads that define Beijing's layout. Beyond the center lie the Great Wall to the north, the Ming Tombs to the northwest, and the massive new districts of Tongzhou and Daxing to the southeast, including the spectacular Daxing International Airport designed by Zaha Hadid.

Beijing is also the gateway to northern China. The city's two airports connect to every major world city. High-speed rail reaches Shanghai in 4.5 hours, Xi'an in 4 hours, and Guangzhou in 8 hours. Most travelers spend 3–5 days in Beijing, combining imperial sites, the Great Wall, and contemporary culture. The 2008 Olympics transformed the city's infrastructure, leaving world-class stadiums, parks, and an extensive subway system (27 lines, 450+ stations).

The complex covers 2.73 km² — larger than the Forbidden City — with the iconic circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests as its centerpiece.

The Hall of Prayer is a triple-gabled circular building constructed entirely without nails. The Echo Wall allows whispers to travel along the circular wall. Early morning visits reveal locals practicing tai chi, singing opera, and playing cards under ancient cypress trees. A perfect mix of history and daily Beijing life.
