Mutianyu Great Wall

Mutianyu Great Wall 慕田峪长城

The most scenic and visitor-friendly section of the Great Wall, featuring watchtowers, cable cars, and a thrilling toboggan slide down the mountain. Mutianyu stretches 2.25 km with 22 watchtowers, offering incredible views of the wall winding through forested mountains. It's far less crowded than Badaling but equally magnificent. The cable car (¥120 round-trip) saves you a steep climb, while the single-rider toboggan slide (¥60) provides an exciting descent — a unique Great Wall experience. The wall here is well-restored but retains its rugged character, especially at the far ends where fewer tourists venture.

Hours: Apr–Oct 7:30–18:00 / Nov–Mar 8:00–17:00
Admission: ¥40 (Apr–Oct) / ¥35 (Nov–Mar). Cable car ¥120 R/T, Toboggan ¥60 (one-way down).

Hongluo Temple

Hongluo Temple 红螺寺

One of Beijing's oldest and most revered Buddhist temples, dating back to 348 AD. Located at the foot of Hongluo Mountain, the temple complex features ancient halls, stunning bamboo forests, and a scenic path leading to a giant statue of Buddha on the hilltop. The temple is famous for its "female bamboo" (雌竹) — bamboo shoots that grow into curved shapes, and its thousand-year-old male and female pine trees. The 500-meter climb to the hilltop Buddha statue takes about 30 minutes and offers panoramic views. Spring temple fairs draw crowds, but weekdays are peaceful. A perfect blend of spiritual atmosphere and natural beauty.

Hours: 8:00–18:00 (Apr–Oct) / 8:00–17:00 (Nov–Mar)
Admission: ¥50–60 depending on season.

Yanqi Lake

Yanqi Lake 雁栖湖

A serene 700-hectare lake surrounded by forested hills, where Beijing's annual APEC summit was held in 2014. The lake offers boating, kayaking, cycling around the shore, and spectacular sunset views. The Yanqi Lake International Convention Center is an architectural landmark, though conference facilities are not open to general public. The public park area features walking paths, a beach, and a viewing tower. It's particularly beautiful in autumn when surrounding hills turn golden. Weekends can be busy with family picnics; weekdays offer tranquil lake views. Many visitors combine Yanqi Lake with nearby Hongluo Temple.

Hours: 8:00–17:00 (Nov–Mar) / 8:00–18:00 (Apr–Oct)
Admission: ¥40–50. Boating ¥40–80/hour.

Qinglong Gorge (Green Dragon Gorge)

Qinglong Gorge (Green Dragon Gorge) 青龙峡

A scenic gorge combining mountain hiking, lake boating, and Great Wall ruins. The site features a 600-meter-long dam creating a reservoir, with activities including bungee jumping (¥150), rock climbing, rafting, and zip-lining. An unrestored Great Wall section climbs steeply up the gorge's cliffs, offering dramatic views for adventurous hikers. Less commercialized than central Beijing attractions, Qinglong Gorge attracts adventure seekers and nature lovers. Summer weekends are popular for rafting and water activities; autumn hiking is spectacular. Allow a full day to explore both the gorge and climb the wall.

Hours: 7:30–18:00 (Apr–Oct) / 8:00–17:00 (Nov–Mar)
Admission: ¥54 (Apr–Oct) / ¥35 (Nov–Mar). Activities priced separately.

Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall

Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall 黄花城水长城

Beijing's only "water-meets-wall" Great Wall experience, where three sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall plunge directly into a turquoise reservoir. Built over 600 years ago, the wall was submerged when the dam was constructed, creating a stunning scene of ancient battlements rising straight from the water. Visitors can hike along the wall, take a boat ride to view the submerged sections from the lake, explore the Ming Dynasty chestnut orchard (ancient trees still producing!), and visit the Water Curtain Cave. The scenery is spectacular in every season: spring blossoms, summer greenery reflected in the reservoir, autumn foliage over the flooded wall, and winter ice formations. The hike is moderate — easier than Mutianyu — with a 3-4 km loop around the lake. Boat tours (¥50/person, 30 min) are the best way to photograph the wall-in-water effect.

Hours: 8:00–17:00 (Nov–Mar) / 8:00–18:00 (Apr–Oct)
Admission: ¥60. Boat tour ¥50/person. Canoe rental ¥40/hour.

Labagou Primitive Forest Park

Labagou Primitive Forest Park 喇叭沟原始森林公园

Known as "Beijing's North Pole," this is the largest pristine forest in the Beijing region with a staggering 96% forest coverage. Located in Huairou's northernmost tip near the Hebei border, the park spans three scenic zones: Nanhouling (main peak at 1,705m), Baizhangya (cliff), and Bingchuan (glacier). The park is most famous for its vast white birch forests (白桦林) that turn brilliant gold in autumn, but it's spectacular year-round — wild rhododendrons bloom in May-June, summer offers cool hiking at 22°C average (no air conditioning needed!), and winter creates a silent snow-covered wonderland. Wildlife includes wild boar, leopards (rare sightings), and numerous bird species. The 3-hour hike from the entrance to Nanhouling summit is the most popular route. This is a full-day trip from central Beijing — allow 2.5 hours driving each way.

Hours: 7:30–17:30 (May–Oct) / Closed or limited hours Nov–Apr (check ahead)
Admission: ¥40 (peak season) / ¥25 (shoulder).

Shengquan Mountain

Shengquan Mountain 圣泉山旅游风景区

A scenic mountain area combining Buddhist heritage with natural beauty, located just south of Huairou's main attractions. The mountain is named after a sacred spring (圣泉) discovered during the Tang Dynasty, whose waters are believed to have healing properties. The hiking trail passes through beautiful pine forests, ancient Buddhist carvings, and a series of prayer flag-draped pavilions leading to the summit temple. The 2-hour climb (moderate difficulty) rewards hikers with panoramic views of Huairou's mountain ranges. The mountain is less crowded than Mutianyu or Hongluo Temple, making it a peaceful alternative for those wanting nature with cultural elements. The spring water station near the entrance allows visitors to fill bottles with mineral-rich mountain spring water — a local tradition.

Hours: 8:00–17:00 (daily)
Admission: ¥35. Cable car ¥50 one-way (seasonal).

Xiangshuihu Great Wall & Waterfall

Xiangshuihu Great Wall 响水湖长城风景区

A dramatic convergence of Ming Great Wall and a multi-tiered mountain waterfall — "Xiangshuihu" literally means "Ringing Water Lake" for the sound of cascading water echoing through the gorge. The site features a 50-meter-high natural waterfall that crashes into a turquoise pool, with unrestored Great Wall sections climbing the cliffs on either side. Unlike the polished Mutianyu, this section of wall is wild and rugged, offering a more adventurous climbing experience. The scenic area includes the "Great Wall Waterfall" viewpoint (the park's signature photo spot), a 2-km hike to the upper wall sections, and cultural exhibits about Ming Dynasty garrison life. The combination of water and ancient stone makes this one of Huairou's most photogenic spots. Best visited after rain when the waterfall is at full flow.

Hours: 8:00–17:00 (daily)
Admission: ¥32.

Shentangyu Natural Scenic Area

Shentangyu Natural Scenic Area 神堂峪自然风景区

A tranquil valley and river canyon famous for its crystal-clear streams, towering cliffs, and the unique "Shentangyu Stacked Bridge" (神堂峪叠桥) — a series of flat stone slabs arranged across a river that create a playful stepping-stone crossing. The 7-km scenic corridor follows the creek through a narrowing gorge, passing natural pools perfect for a summer dip, small waterfalls, and caves said to have been hideouts during wartime. Unlike the major ticketed attractions, Shentangyu offers a more rustic and uncommercialized experience — you can buy fresh fruit from village stands along the route. The area is also known for its "natural air conditioning" effect in summer, when the valley stays several degrees cooler than Beijing. Half-day trip enough; combine with a meal at one of the nearby trout farms.

Hours: 8:00–17:00
Admission: ¥35.

Practical Travel Tips

Best time to visit Huairou: Autumn (October-November) is spectacular when the mountains turn gold and red. Spring (April-May) offers fresh green bamboo at Hongluo Temple. Summer (June-August) is peak season for lake activities but can get crowded on weekends.

Getting to Mutianyu: The easiest way is Bus 916 Express from Dongzhimen to Huairou (~60 min), then Bus h23/h24 to the wall (~30 min). Weekend tourist buses from Qianmen (¥80 round-trip) are more convenient but leave early (6:30 am).

Cable car + toboggan must-do: Take the cable car up to Mutianyu, hike 2-3 hours along the wall heading right (watchtowers 1-14), then ride the toboggan down from watchtower 6. It's the most fun Great Wall experience in Beijing.

Huairou specialty food: Do not leave without trying roasted rainbow trout (烤虹鳟鱼) — Huairou is famous for its freshwater trout farms. Grilled, braised, or sashimi-style, it's available at almost every restaurant near Yanqi Lake and Hongluo Temple. Expect ¥40-60 per fish.

Best day route: For a perfect one-day itinerary: Hongluo Temple (morning, quiet) → Yanqi Lake (lunch with lake view) → Mutianyu (afternoon, sunset) → dinner at a trout restaurant. This route minimizes back-and-forth driving.

Huairou Travel Budget

Day trip budget (300-500 RMB/person): Bus 916 Express (¥22 round-trip) + Mutianyu Great Wall (¥40) + Cable car round-trip (¥120) + Trout lunch (¥60) + Bus h24 to wall (¥6) + Toboggan descent (¥60). A full Mutianyu day including cable car and lunch.

Two-day getaway (800-1200 RMB/person): Includes one night at a Yanqi Lake area hotel (¥300-600/night), both Mutianyu and Hongluo Temple, trout dinner, plus Yanqi Lake boating (¥50). Perfect weekend trip from Beijing.

Budget-friendly tip: Skip the cable car at Mutianyu and hike up instead — it's a steep but manageable 40-minute climb and saves ¥120. The wall itself is the same at the top.

Family day out (2 adults + 1 child): Mutianyu entrance (¥40+¥40+free under 1.2m) + Cable car (¥120+¥120) + Trout lunch (¥120) + Toboggan (¥60 ride down together). Total ~¥500 for a memorable family outing.

Best value accommodation: Farm-stay guesthouses (农家院) near Mutianyu village offer simple rooms for ¥150-250/night with home-cooked dinner included. Far more authentic than chain hotels and often include free Great Wall transport.
