Hengshui Laobaigan Distillery & Liquor Culture Museum (衡水老白干酿酒工艺园)

Laobaigan — 1,900-Year-Old Chinese Liquor, 67% ABV, "National Liquor" Since 1915

The Hengshui Laobaigan Distillery (衡水老白干酿酒工艺园, Héngshuǐ Lǎobáigān Niàngjiǔ Gōngyì Yuán, "Hengshui Old White Dry Liquor Craft Park") is the birthplace of China's famous "Laobaigan" (老白干, Lǎobáigān, "Old White Dry") liquor — a clear sorghum-based spirit (白酒, Báijiǔ) with a 1,900-year history dating back to the Han Dynasty (东汉时期, 25–220 CE). The distillery, founded in 1946 as a state enterprise combining 18 traditional distilleries, is now a public company (Hengshui Laobaigan Liquor Co., Ltd., stock code 600559, annual production of 50,000 tons). The liquor is famous for being one of China's strongest (67% ABV, the highest of any major Chinese liquor brand — compared to Maotai's 53% and Wuliangye's 52%), yet it's surprisingly smooth with a clean, dry finish ("old white dry" literally means old, white (clear), and dry). The distillery tour includes: the "Historical Fermentation Pits" (历史发酵池, 500+ underground pits dating to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), some 600+ years old, still actively used for fermentation — the oldest continuous-use fermentation pits in China, "active for 600+ years"); the "Distillation Workshop" (蒸馏车间, with 50+ traditional iron pot stills producing 1,000 liters each day, visitors can see the steaming-hot process 8:00–11:00am and 2:00–5:00pm); the "Maturation Cellar" (陈酿窖, with 5,000+ ceramic urns of aging liquor, some from the 1950s, with a 1952 bottle valued at ¥50,000); the "Liquor Culture Museum" (酒文化博物馆, free with tour, open 8:00am–6:00pm, with 1,000+ artifacts including 2,000-year-old Han Dynasty bronze wine vessels, Ming Dynasty porcelain liquor bottles, and the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition gold medal that the brand won); and the "Tasting Room" (品鉴室, ¥20 for a 3-shot tasting set (10-year aged ¥5,000/bottle taste, 20-year ¥10,000, and 30-year ¥20,000 — a ¥10,000/bottle experience for ¥20!). Wuqiang New Year Paintings Museum (武强年画博物馆, Wuqiang Nianhua Bowuguan)

Wuqiang New Year Paintings — 500-Year-Old Woodcut Folk Art, One of China's "Big Four" New Year Painting Centers

The Wuqiang New Year Paintings Museum (武强年画博物馆, Wǔqiáng Niánhuà Bówùguǎn) is located in Wuqiang County (武强县, Wǔqiáng Xiàn), 50km northwest of Hengshui city center. Wuqiang is one of the "Big Four" (中国四大年画) traditional Chinese New Year painting centers alongside Yangliuqing (Tianjin), Taohuawu (Suzhou), and Weifang (Shandong). The woodcut New Year painting tradition in Wuqiang dates back 500+ years to the Ming Dynasty (1505–1521 CE, Zhengde era), with 1,000+ families in the county historically engaged in the craft. Wuqiang paintings (武强年画) are distinctive for their bold colors (black outlines with red, green, yellow, and blue fills), simple but expressive figures, and humorous, often satirical subjects (unique among the Big Four for its folk humor — depicting farming life, folk tales, and cheeky kitchen gods). The museum, built in 1992 and expanded 2007, covers 5,000㎡ with 5 exhibition halls featuring: "The History Hall" (历史厅, 500+ woodcut blocks dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1500s), including a complete 1580 "Door God Calendar" (门神年历) — the oldest known Chinese New Year painting calendar); "The Craft Hall" (工艺厅, a live demonstration area where 5 master artists show the full process: woodblock carving (cutter chisel, 3–7 days per block), inking (lampblack ink, hand-applied), paper pressing (Xuan paper from Anhui, double-layer), and coloring (5 colors, hand-painted or 2–3 color woodcut, 1% of the ¥200 billion Chinese New Year painting market for ~60 artists today); "The Cultural Hall" (文化厅, 300+ New Year paintings displayed by theme — door gods (门神), prosperity (福禄寿), zodiac animals, and revolutionary-themed prints from the 1950–1970s); and "The Gift Shop" (礼品店, ¥20–200 per print, with ¥50 for a hand-carved woodcut print made by a master artist in front of you). Baoyun Temple — 1,400-Year-Old, 7-Story Ming Dynasty Pagoda (42m) & Oldest Buddhist Temple in Hengshui

Baoyun Temple (宝云寺, Bǎoyún Sì, "Precious Cloud Temple") is the oldest Buddhist temple in the Hengshui area, located 3km south of Hengshui city center near the shore of Hengshui Lake. The temple was first built in 600 CE during the Sui Dynasty (隋代, 581–618 CE), but the main surviving structure — the "Baoyun Pagoda" (宝云塔, Bǎoyún Tǎ) — was built in 1573 CE (Ming Dynasty, Wanli era 1573–1620). The pagoda is a 42-meter-tall, 7-story octagonal brick structure with carved eaves, flying corners, and a bronze spire at the top (4 meters tall, 500 kg). The pagoda's architecture is notable for being built with glazed bricks (琉璃砖, Líulí Zhuān) — a high-quality fired brick that gives the pagoda a greenish-brown sheen, one of only 3 Ming Dynasty glazed brick pagodas in Hebei Province (the other two being in Zhengding and Lingxiao). The temple complex includes: the "Main Hall" (大雄宝殿, a 3-bay, 12-meter-high hall built 1992, with a 4-meter-tall gilded bronze Sakyamuni Buddha (1.5 tons), free); the "Pagoda Climb" (登塔, visitors can climb to the 5th floor (not the 7th, partially collapsed during the 1966 Xingtai earthquake (6.8 magnitude, the 2nd deadliest earthquake in modern Chinese history after Tangshan 1976, killing 8,000+ in Hebei) — 5th floor is safe, offering a panoramic view of Hengshui Lake and the city, ¥10 extra); the "Bell Tower" (钟楼, with a 2-ton bronze bell cast 1690 CE (Qing Dynasty, Kangxi era), residents say ringing the bell 3 times brings good luck (¥5, staff will be nearby if you want to try it); and the "Buddhist Scripture Library" (藏经楼, with 5,000+ Buddhist sutras, some dating to the Ming Dynasty). The best spring strategy: early morning (6:00–9:00am) at Hengshui Lake bird tower → morning (9:30am–12:00pm) Baoyun Temple → lunch at Lake Pier Restaurant (¥25–50) → afternoon (1:00–4:00pm) Laobaigan Distillery tour → evening Night Market (6:00–8:00pm).

☀️ Summer (June–August) — PEAK season: lotus flowers, music festival & lake tours: Summer (22–32°C) is the busiest season. Hengshui Lake's "Lotus Flower Field" (荷花荡) is spectacular in July–August — 10km² of pink lotus flowers in full bloom, best 7:00–9:00am (the lotus open at dawn). The Zhouwo International Music Festival (August, ¥100/day) draws 100,000+ visitors for 3 days of live music with 50+ bands (pop, rock, and traditional Chinese music). The Lüli Ancient Town's Han Feast (¥68/person) is a popular evening dinner (book in advance, limited to 100 seats per session). The Night Market is most lively (70+ stalls, especially the Laobaigan Ice Cream stall — 200+ cones sold per night in summer). The best summer strategy: early morning lotus fields (6:30–8:30am, before heat and crowds) → late morning Hengshui Lake boat tour (9:00–11:00am, the Full Tour is best in clear weather for the panoramic views) → afternoon Zhouwo Music Town (1:00–5:00pm, air-conditioned museum + indoor performances) → evening Night Market (7:00pm–midnight).

🍂 Autumn (September–November) — Birdwatching II & harvest season: Autumn (10–20°C) is excellent. The autumn bird migration (September–October) is the 2nd best birdwatching season (southward migration, 60+ species). The Laobaigan Distillery tour is most atmospheric in autumn (the harvest season for sorghum, the main ingredient in Laobaigan, when the distillery's fermentation vats are most active). The Anping Wire Mesh Expo Park is least crowded. The Hengshui Lake "Full Tour" (¥120, 3 hours) is best in autumn (the golden reeds contrast beautifully with the blue lake). The Wuqiang New Year Paintings Museum's "Craft Hall" has live demonstrations all day (the paper doesn't warp as easily in autumn's lower humidity — print quality is best this time of year).

❄️ Winter (December–February) — Quiet season & liquor tasting: Winter (-5–5°C) is the quietest season. The Laobaigan Distillery is most cozy — the tasting room (¥20 for a 3-shot set) is a warm escape from the cold, and the 67% liquor is famously warming for a "cold protector" (驱寒, Qū Hán) drink. Hengshui Lake is partially frozen (the central 30km² freezes to 20–30cm thick, safe for walking by confirmed by the reserve staff) — the "Ice Lake" (冰湖) is a beautiful sight on sunny winter days (best 10:00am–3:00pm). The Baoyun Pagoda's glazed bricks glow in the winter afternoon light (best 2:00–4:00pm). The Night Market is smaller but warm food items like the Laobaigan-braised Chicken (¥15–20) and Hengshui Noodle Soup (¥8–10) are perfect winter comfort food. The Wuqiang Museum is quiet (fewer than 50 visitors/day).

💡 Practical Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) for birdwatching at Hengshui Lake. Summer (June–August) for the lotus flowers and Zhouwo Music Festival. Autumn (September–October) for pleasant weather and the distillery tour.
  • Recommended 1-day itinerary (from Shijiazhuang): Morning (7:00am): train from Shijiazhuang to Hengshui (1 hour 40 min, ¥60). 8:30–10:30am: Hengshui Lake (2 hours, ¥40 + boat ¥70). 10:30am–12:00pm: Baoyun Temple (1.5 hours, ¥25). Lunch (12:00–1:00pm): Lake Pier Restaurant (¥25–50). Afternoon (1:30–3:30pm): Laobaigan Distillery (2 hours, ¥50, tasting +¥20). Early evening (4:00–6:00pm): Hengshui Night Market (¥10–25). 7:00pm train back to Shijiazhuang.
  • Recommended 2-day itinerary — "Lake & Culture": Day 1: Morning train → Hengshui Lake (full day, 4–6 hours, ¥40–120) + Baoyun Temple (1.5 hours, ¥25) → Night Market → stay overnight (¥150–250/night). Day 2: Morning bus to Zhouwo Music Town (9:00am–1:00pm, 3 hours, ¥50) + lunch → afternoon Wuqiang Museum (1.5 hours, ¥30) + Laobaigan Distillery (1.5 hours, ¥50) → evening train or overnight stay.
  • Hengshui Lake Birdwatching strategy: 1) The best time is 6:00–9:00am (spring and autumn migration seasons). 2) The Observation Tower (观鸟塔, free) offers the best views — bring binoculars (¥20 rental at the Visitor Center). 3) The 324 bird species include 15 nationally protected species — the "Oriental White Stork" (东方白鹳) and "Red-crowned Crane" (丹顶鹤) are the most spectacular. 4) Winter (December–February) sees 500+ Whooper Swans (大天鹅) wintering on the ice-free central lake. 5) The "Medium Tour" (¥70, 2 hours) is the best value for casual visitors — it covers Bird Island and the Reed Marsh, which is where most birds are found.
  • Laobaigan Distillery tips: 1) The tasting room (品鉴室, ¥20) is the best value in Hengshui — you get to try 3 liquors (10-year, 20-year, 30-year) that would cost ¥5,000–20,000 per bottle. 2) The distillery is open 8:00am–6:00pm, BUT the active distillation is only 8:00–11:00am (the steam and aroma are strongest in the morning). 3) The gift shop sells "distillery-direct" Laobaigan at 30–50% below retail (a 500ml 5-year bottle is ¥80 at the distillery vs. ¥120–150 in Beijing). 4) Laobaigan is 67% ABV — one shot (50ml) equals 3 standard drinks! Pace yourself or bring a designated driver for the rest of the day. 5) Photography is NOT allowed in the fermentation pit zone (the pits are trade secrets).
  • Zhouwo Music Town experience tip: 1) The "Guitar Workshop Tour" (免费) is the highlight — you can walk into 10+ workshops and watch real guitar-making. 2) The "Music Street" (音乐街) has shops where you can play guitars for ¥0–100 for 30 minutes. 3) If you want to buy a guitar, the town's "Factory Direct" prices are 30–50% below Chinese retail (a beginner guitar starts at ¥200 vs. ¥400–600 in Beijing). 4) The "Live Music Stage" (表演舞台) has 3 performances daily (10:30am, 2:00pm, 4:00pm) — the 2:00pm show is the most popular (often full). 5) The Zhouwo International Music Festival (August, ¥100/day) is world-class — book accommodation in Hengshui city at least 2 weeks in advance (the town fills up).
  • Wuqiang New Year Paintings tips: 1) The museum (¥30, students ¥15) has live woodcut demonstrations (free, included in the ticket). 2) The gift shop sells original hand-printed paintings for ¥20–200 — the ¥50 prints are the best value (hand-carved, single-color woodcut). 3) The 5-color "Door God" prints (门神年画, ¥100–200) are the most popular souvenir. 4) The craft hall's 5 master artists work 8:30am–5:00pm — arrive before 10:00am to see the full block-carving process. 5) The museum is in Wuqiang county, 50km from Hengshui — combine this visit with Zhouwo Music Town (both are on the same route northwest of the city).
  • Lüli Ancient Town tips: The Han Dynasty-themed town offers: 1) Hanfu rental (¥30–50 for 30 minutes) — best for photos at the Han-style buildings. 2) The "Han Feast" (¥68/person) is an all-you-can-eat banquet served on short-legged Han tables — book in advance (limited to 100 seats per session). 3) The "Han Dynasty Wedding Show" (11:30am and 4:30pm, ¥20 extra) is fun and the performers speak Chinese only (but the costumes are amazing regardless of language). 4) The town is right next to Hengshui Lake — combine both in the same day (walk from the Hanfe Street to the Lake Pier in 15 minutes).
  • Payment methods: WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted everywhere. Carry ¥50–100 cash for the Night Market (some small stalls are cash-only). The Laobaigan Distillery gift shop takes mobile payments. CRH tickets can be purchased with WeChat/Alipay at the station.
