The mountain is nationally famous as the legendary origin of the "Qixi Festival" (七夕节, Qīxī Jié, "Chinese Valentine's Day", 7th day of 7th lunar month) — the story of the Cowherd (牛郎, Niúláng) and the Weaver Girl (织女, Zhīnǚ), a 2,000-year-old folk tale about a heavenly weaver and a mortal cowherd who fell in love, were separated by the "Milky Way" (天河, the "Heavenly River" — also called the Silver River), and are allowed to meet only once a year on Qixi when magpies form a bridge across the river. The mountain features: the "Fairy Bridge" (鹊桥, Quèqiáo "Magpie Bridge", a 50-meter-long, 3-meter-wide steel bridge at 800 meters elevation, painted to look like a rainbow, symbolizing the magpie bridge; crossing it is considered good luck for couples, free); the "Cowherd and Weaver Girl Statues" (牛郎织女像, a 5-meter-tall bronze statue of the pair in an embrace at the summit, built 2005); the "Love Locks" Wall (同心锁墙, 100+meters of steel chains covered by 10,000+ padlocks left by couples, each inscribed with names and dates, free); and the "Tianhe Mountain Hiking Trail" (天河山徒步道, a 5km loop trail from the base to the summit and back, 2–3 hours, moderate difficulty, with 10+ viewing platforms overlooking the surrounding Taihang Mountains). 🌤️ Seasonal Highlights

🌸 Spring (April–May) — Bloom of spring flowers: Spring (10–22°C) is pleasant for visiting. The Kaiyuan Temple's 1,400-year-old pagoda is surrounded by cherry blossoms (early April, 2 weeks). The Qilihe Park's wetland is most active with migratory birds (best 7:00–9:00am). The Tianhe Mountain is green and full of wildflowers (May–June). The best spring strategy: morning Kaiyuan Temple (8:00–10:00am) → Qilihe Park (10:30am–12:00pm) → afternoon Guo Shoujing Hall (1:30–3:30pm) → evening Night Market (5:30–8:00pm).

☀️ Summer (June–August) — Qixi Festival & urban drift season: Summer (22–33°C) is the busiest season. The Qilihe "Urban Drift" opens (June–October, ¥30–50, 5km, 1 hour). The Tianhe Mountain hosts the "Qixi Festival" (七夕节, Chinese Valentine's Day, 7th day of 7th lunar month ~ August, 10,000+ visitors for the night celebration — love lock ceremony, dress in traditional Chinese clothing, cultural performances on the Fairy Bridge). The Night Market is most lively (80+ stalls, 5,000+ visitors/night). The Qilihe Night Light Show (7:30–9:30pm) is spectacular. The Kongshan Cave is cool at 16–18°C year-round. The best summer strategy: early morning (6:30–8:30am) avoid the heat → morning Kongshan Cave (9:00am–12:00pm, naturally cool) → afternoon Qilihe drift boat (2:00–4:00pm) → evening Night Market (6:00pm–midnight) + Qilihe light show (7:30–9:30pm).

🍂 Autumn (September–November) — Pleasant hiking & photography: Autumn (10–20°C) is excellent. The Tianhe Mountain is perfect for hiking (clear skies, cool temperatures, golden-gold foliage in October). The Kongshan Cave's above-ground area is also beautiful in autumn. The Xingtai Ancient City Wall is best for photography in autumn's warm light (4:00–5:30pm). The sesame cakes are most fragrant in cooler autumn months.

❄️ Winter (December–February) — Cold, quiet & indoor museums: Winter (-5–5°C) is very quiet. The Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall and Kaiyuan Temple are empty (fewer than 50 visitors/day). The Kongshan Cave maintains 16–18°C — it is warmer than outside and very pleasant! The Qilihe Park drift is closed (only June–October). The Night Market is smaller but still operates. Bring EXTREME winter gear — Xingtai's southeastern Hebei wind comes off the North China Plain and is biting.

💡 Practical Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) for cherry blossoms and birdwatching. Summer (June–August) for Qilihe drift and Qixi Festival. Autumn (September–October) for Tianhe Mountain hiking. Winter for empty temples and the constant-temperature cave.

  • Kongshan Cave photography tip: The cave has NO flash photography allowed. Bring a "night mode" capable phone (iPhone 14+ or Huawei P60+ for best low-light results). The "Jade Hall" (玉厅) is the most photogenic chamber with the largest stalactite clusters. Visit 10:00–11:00am when the natural light at the cave entrance creates the best ambiance. The cave is 16–18°C year-round — bring a light jacket even in summer!
  • Tianhe Mountain Qixi tip: If you visit in August around the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day, roughly early to mid-August in the solar calendar), the mountain is extremely popular (10,000+ visitors) — arrive by 7:00am to hike and reach the Fairy Bridge before the overwhelming crowds. The "Love Locks" wall — available year-round — is an excellent idea for couples but less crowded in non-summer months. The mountain is 2 hours from Xingtai city center. Check the lunar calendar for exact dates each year.
  • The unique "donkey burger" take: Xingtai has its own unique style of this appetizing street food: the donkey meat is BAKED INSIDE the sesame flatbread (not served separately like Baoding or Tangshan). The resulting texture is crisp on the outside and more savory-soft inside, with the meat and bread melding together. Try it at any stall on Sesame Cake Street (Guoshou Street, near the railway station) for ¥6–10/piece.
  • Payment methods: WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted at most places. Carry ¥50–100 cash for the Night Market stalls (some small vendors are cash-only). The CRH tickets can be purchased with mobile payment at the station.
