Jingpo Lake — China's Largest Alpine Crater Lake, World Geopark, National 5A

Jingpo Lake (镜泊湖, Jìngpō Hú) is China's largest alpine barrier lake (高山堰塞湖) and one of the world's most spectacular volcanic lake landscapes, located in Ning'an City (宁安市) about 90km southwest of Mudanjiang (1.5-hour drive via G11 Expressway). Formed approximately 10,000 years ago by massive volcanic eruptions that blocked the Mudan River, the lake covers 1,726 km² with a water surface of 79.3 km² and a storage capacity of approximately 1.6 billion m³. It is a designated World Geopark (世界地质公园) and National 5A Tourist Attraction.

The lake's crown jewel is the Diaoshuilou Waterfall (吊水楼瀑布), a magnificent basalt waterfall where the Mudan River plunges 20 meters over volcanic cliffs — in summer the water roars at 200–400 m³/second, while in winter it transforms into a glittering ice waterfall (冰瀑) with crystalline formations up to 15 meters thick. The waterfall is famous for its Guinness World Record-holding cliff diving performances (悬崖跳水表演) daily at 10:00am and 2:00pm, where professional divers leap from the 20-meter platform into the churning waters below — the show continues even in winter when the diver plunges into a small unfrozen pool at the base of the ice waterfall.

Summer activities include boat tours (¥50/person, 1.5-hour cruise across the lake's widest section, departs from the "South Wharf" 南码头 9:00am–3:00pm), lakeside hiking (10km of trails along the eastern shore), and fishing permits (¥20/day, common catches include crucian carp and mandarin fish). The area enjoys cool summer temperatures averaging 10–20°C, making it an ideal summer retreat. Entry: ¥100 (summer, May–October) / ¥80 (winter, November–April). China Snow Town (中国雪乡, Zhongguo Xuexiang)

China Snow Town — Fairy-Tale Snow Scenery, 2m Rooftop Snow, Winter Wonderland

China Snow Town (中国雪乡, officially "Shuangfeng Forest Farm" 双峰林场), located in the Changbai Mountain Range's Zhangguangcai Ridge (张广才岭主峰) at 1,500 meters elevation, is China's most famous snow destination with the heaviest annual snowfall in the country — exceeding 2 meters. The town is renowned for its unique "snow mushrooms" (雪蘑菇), "snow cakes" (雪蛋糕), and "snow pillows" (雪枕头) that form naturally on wooden rooftops, creating a landscape straight out of a fairy tale. Rooftop snow reaches an incredible 2 meters thick by February.

The snow season runs from November to April. At night (5:30–7:30pm), colorful LED lights illuminate the snow-covered wooden houses creating a glowing wonderland — best photographed when the sky is still twilight blue. The most spectacular sight is at sunrise (6:30–7:30am in winter) when golden rays hit the snow-covered rooftops, creating a magical "golden snow cap" effect (金色雪顶), best viewed from the Snow Town Viewing Platform (雪乡观景台, 15-minute hike from the town center, this golden window lasts only 20–30 minutes). Activities include snowmobiling (¥100/10 minutes), horse-drawn sledding (¥50/person, 30-minute ride through snowy birch forests), and skiing at Snow Town Ski Resort (¥80/2 hours, 3 slopes for all levels).

Located 180km from Mudanjiang (3–4 hours by bus ¥60, departures 6:00am and 1:00pm daily). Accommodation: ¥150/night basic farmstay to ¥800/night upscale snow-view lodge with floor heating. Underground Forest (火山口森林, Huoshankou Senlin)

The Underground Forest (地下森林, Dìxià Sēnlín, also called "Volcano Crater Forest" 火山口森林), located 50km northwest of Jingpo Lake (best combined in one day), is one of China's most unique geological wonders — a lush forest growing inside ancient volcanic craters formed 10,000 years ago. The scenic area features 7 volcanic craters, with the largest measuring 400 meters deep and 400 meters wide, creating a natural "giant bowl" where sunlight reaches the bottom only 4–5 hours per day (10:00am–3:00pm, best for photography). Inside the crater, ancient Korean pines (some 300+ years old, reaching 30 meters tall), Manchurian ash trees (水曲柳), and Amur cork trees (黄波罗) create a dense "forest inside a cave" ecosystem, with crater walls covered in moss and ferns.

Visitors descend via well-maintained wooden boardwalks (木栈道, 1,200 steps descending 300 meters over 1.5km, moderate difficulty, 45–60 minutes down; return ascent 60–90 minutes or shuttle bus ¥10/person back to entrance). The crater temperature stays 3–5°C cooler than outside (perfect on hot summer days), with air negative ion concentration exceeding 10,000/cm³ — 15× the city level. The 3km crater rim trail (1.5–2 hours) offers panoramic viewing platforms; the North Rim Viewing Platform (北缘观景台) is best for wide-angle photography (shoot with 16–24mm lens, best 11:00am–1:00pm). Also includes the Crystal Cave (水晶洞, seasonal ice formations December–February) and Crater Vegetation Museum (火山口植被博物馆, 500㎡, 200+ plant species). Entry: ¥30. Eight Women River Memorial (八女投江纪念馆, Ba Nü Tou Jiang Jinianguan)

Eight Women Memorial — National Patriotic Education Base, 1938 Heroine Martyrdom

The Eight Women River Memorial (八女投江纪念馆), located in Sanjiazi Village, Diaoling Town, Linkou County (林口县刁翎镇三家子村, about 120km north of Mudanjiang, 2-hour drive), is a National Patriotic Education Base for Women (全国妇女爱国主义教育基地) commemorating the heroic sacrifice of eight female Anti-Japanese Allied Army soldiers led by Leng Yun (冷云). On October 20, 1938, after being surrounded by 1,000+ Japanese troops near the Wusihun River (乌斯浑河), the eight women — aged just 13 to 23 — fought bravely for 4 hours before choosing to walk into the icy river rather than be captured.

The complex features a 1,600㎡ indoor exhibition hall (2 halls, 300+ artifacts, 400+ photographs). The first section, "Eight Women's Deeds" (八女事迹展), uses life-size dioramas, multimedia presentations, and original artifacts to tell their story. The second section, "Mudanjiang 14-Year Anti-Japanese Struggle" (牡丹江十四年抗日斗争史), expands the narrative to cover the full history of local resistance from 1931 to 1945, featuring authentic weapons, guerrilla maps, and villager testimonies. Outdoor sites include the 18-meter-tall "Eight Women Martyrs Monument" (八女英烈纪念碑, erected 1986, inscribed by Deng Xiaoping), the actual martyrdom site by the riverbank, and the 3,000㎡ Memorial Square. Entry is FREE (ID required). Open 9:00am–4:00pm (closed Mondays). Allow 1.5–2.5 hours.

Sandao Pass National Forest Park (三道关国家森林公园, Sandao Guan Senlin Gongyuan)

Sandao Pass National Forest Park (三道关国家森林公园), rated National AAA, is located 30km from Mudanjiang (40-minute drive via S202) covering 12,000 hectares of pristine forests at 400–800 meters elevation. Known as "Northern Mini Huangshan" (北国小黄山) for its steep, jagged peaks and bizarre rock formations that resemble the famous Huangshan Mountain, the park features three narrow mountain ravines where trails pass through natural stone "gates" formed by massive boulders.

Autumn (September–November) is the biggest draw: the mountains transform into a spectacular "Five-Color Sea" (五花山色) of red, orange, gold, and purple as maple, birch, and Korean larch trees turn brilliant colors. Best photography spots: the Five-Color Viewing Platform (五花山观景台, 1-hour hike to 800m elevation, 360° views, peak colors October 1–15, best 4:00–6:00pm) and the Stone Sea (石海, a 2-hectare field of naturally piled granite boulders, best 10:00am–2:00pm). Five hiking trails range from 1.5km (easy, 1 hour through birch forest) to 5km (challenging, 2.5–3 hours along a mountain stream with 5 waterfalls). On-site Mountain Villa Restaurant serves farmhouse chicken stew (¥45) and wild mushroom soup (¥20). Entry: ¥20 (includes both Sandao Pass and "North Mini Huangshan" sections; parking ¥5). Mudanjiang Museum (牡丹江博物馆, Mudanjiang Bowuguan)

Mudanjiang Museum (牡丹江博物馆), located at the southern end of the city's central axis (西安区中轴线南端), opened on July 30, 2011, with a total area of 6,885㎡ across 5 floors. It features 4 permanent exhibition halls and 2 temporary exhibition halls. Floor 1 houses the "Mudanjiang History Exhibition" (1,200㎡, 6,000 years of local history from Neolithic to present, 200+ artifacts including stone tools, pottery, and bronze ware excavated from local sites). Floor 2 is dedicated to the "Eight Women River & Anti-Japanese Struggle" exhibition (1,500㎡, expanded from the memorial with 100+ additional artifacts including a full-scale replica of the eight women's boat and an interactive "Resistance War Map" where visitors trace routes of the Anti-Japanese Allied Army).

Floor 3 features the "Revolutionary Martyrs Exhibition" (1,000㎡, commemorating 50+ local martyrs with personal belongings and photographs). Floors 4–5 host rotating temporary exhibitions (changed every 3–6 months — past shows include "Heilongjiang Intangible Cultural Heritage" and "Mudanjiang 70-Year Development"). The collection includes authentic WWII firearms, grenades, and swords from both Chinese and Japanese forces, 2,000+ historical photographs documenting the city's transformation, and daily life artifacts from the 1950s–1980s. A 2025 upgrade added an Interactive Sand Table (30㎡ LED-lit model showing urban expansion 1949–2025) and a Digital Archive with 5,000+ searchable historical documents. Entry is FREE (ID required). Suifenhe Border Port (绥芬河口岸, Suifenhe Kou'an)

Suifenhe Border Port (绥芬河口岸, Suífēnhé Kǒu'àn) is a National Class-I Border Crossing (国家一类口岸) in Suifenhe City (绥芬河市), about 200km southeast of Mudanjiang (2-hour drive via G10 Expressway), adjacent to Russia's Primorsky Krai with Vladivostok (符拉迪沃斯托克) just 230km away. The Guomen Scenic Area (国门景区) features the imposing Chinese border gate — a 3-story, 30-meter-tall granite structure with "China Suifenhe" in gold characters. Visitors can walk 500 meters along the border fence and use binoculars (¥10/10 minutes at viewing platform) to look toward Russia.

The bustling Suifenhe International Trade Market (20,000㎡, 500+ stalls) sells authentic Russian products: dark chocolate (¥15–30/bar), vodka (¥40–80/bottle), and rose gold jewelry (¥200–500/gram). Russian culinary options at "Russian Restaurant No. 1" include borscht (¥25) and beef stroganoff (¥45). Winter visitors enjoy the Suifenhe Ice & Snow World (January–February, ¥50, 20+ Russian-themed ice sculptures including a "Russian-style Ice Bar" serving vodka at -10°C). Weihu Mountain Film City (Chaihe Little Jiuzhaigou, 威虎山影视城/柴河小九寨)

Weihu Mountain Film City (威虎山影视城), located in Chaihe Town, Hailin City (海林市柴河镇, 70km from Mudanjiang, 1.5-hour drive via S206), is a film and television shooting base built around the famous revolutionary novel "Tracks in the Snowy Forest" (林海雪原) — a story about the 1946 Communist campaign to eliminate bandits in the Northeast China forests. The film city recreates a complete 1940s Northeast China town with wooden buildings: the Weihu Hall (威虎厅, bandit leader's headquarters with life-size wax figures of "Lord Hawk" 座山雕 and hero Yang Zirong 杨子荣), Jiapigou Village (夹皮沟, recreated logging village with 20 wooden houses, blacksmith shop, and communal mess hall), and the River God Temple (河神庙, with intricate wood carvings).

Daily live performances (11:00am and 3:00pm, ¥20 extra, 30 minutes) reenact the "Yang Zirong Infiltrates Weihu Mountain" scene with 1940s costumes, gunfire effects, and horseback stunts. In winter, the entire film city is covered in snow (same "snow mushroom" formations as Snow Town but with fewer crowds and lower prices) — best winter photography 4:00–6:00pm when golden sunset light hits the snow-covered wooden buildings. The surrounding Chaihe Forest Area offers the "Little Jiuzhaigou Trail" (小九寨步道, 3km round trip, 1.5–2 hours, follows a stream with 7 waterfalls and 3 crystal-clear pools, best 10:00am–1:00pm).
