Fuyuan — Easternmost Point of China (抚远东极)

Dongji Square (东极广场) — China's First Sunrise, Ussuri River, Border with Russia

Fuyuan (抚远), located 350 km east of Jiamusi, is the easternmost city in China. The main attraction is Dongji Square (东极广场, Dōngjí Guǎngchǎng, "Easternmost Square") situated on the banks of the Ussuri River (乌苏里江), where a towering monument marks China's easternmost point. Standing here, across the river lies Russia's Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island (大乌苏里岛), visible year-round. The sunrise phenomenon is spectacular: during summer solstice (June 21), the sun rises as early as 3:00 AM, making it the earliest sunrise in China. In winter, temperatures can drop below -30°C, and the frozen river creates a surreal landscape of ice and snow where the sun casts long golden shadows across the white expanse. The square features a large compass-like design on the ground marking directions to major world cities, and there's a small viewing platform extending over the river. Many visitors stay overnight in Fuyuan to catch sunrise, then visit the nearby Black Bear Island (Heixiazi Island 黑瞎子岛) area. Fuyuan is also a major border trade port with Russia, so you'll find Russian goods and occasional Russian-speaking vendors. Allow 2 days for a round trip from Jiamusi: Day 1 drive to Fuyuan (4–5 hours), evening exploration, Day 2 sunrise + return.

For the adventurous, Fuyuan also has the "Dongji Pavilion" (东极阁), a viewing tower near the river built in traditional Chinese style (¥10 entry, 30m tall, panoramic views of the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Ussuri rivers). The local fish market near the dock sells fresh catches from the Ussuri River daily before 9:00 AM — a lively scene with fishermen selling their catch, including the prized "Hezhe fish" (赫哲鱼, ¥20–50/kg depending on species).

Heixiazi Island & Black Bear Park (黑瞎子岛 & 黑熊园)

Heixiazi Island — "Bear Island", China's Easternmost Land Point, 170km² Border Island

Heixiazi Island (黑瞎子岛, Hēixiāzi Dǎo, "Black Bear Island", also known as Bolshoy Ussuriysky in Russian) is a 170km² island located at the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Ussuri rivers, just east of Fuyuan. The island was the subject of a prolonged border dispute between China and Russia, and was finally settled in 2008, with 171km² (forming the western half) returned to China. This makes it one of the most geopolitically significant pieces of land in China. Today, the Chinese side is a protected nature reserve and tourist area, featuring: the "Dongji Pagoda" (东极宝塔, Dōngjí Bǎotǎ), a 9-story, 56-meter-tall octagonal pagoda built 2012 to mark China's easternmost land border — visitors can climb to the 7th floor (¥20) for a panoramic view of the island, the two rivers, and the Russian side across the way; the "Black Bear Park" (黑熊园, a 10-hectare enclosure housing 50+ wild black bears, the island's namesake, accessible via elevated walkway — ¥30 entry, best visited 9:00–11:00am when bears are most active during feeding time); the "China-Russia Border Stone" (中俄界碑, a 2-meter-tall granite stele marking the 2008 border settlement, one of the most photographed spots on the island); the "Wetland Boardwalk" (湿地栈道, a 3km elevated wooden boardwalk through the island's pristine wetlands, with watching towers every 500m for bird spotting — 100+ bird species including white storks and red-crowned cranes have been recorded here). Note: a border pass (边境通行证) is required to visit the island, which can be obtained for free at the Fuyuan Public Security Bureau (抚远市公安局, open Mon–Fri 8:30–11:30am, 1:30–4:30pm, bring passport). Entry to the island's scenic area: ¥80 (student ¥40). Accessible by taxi from Fuyuan (¥30–50, 15 minutes). Open 8:00am–5:00pm (May–October only; closed in winter due to extreme cold and safety concerns). Allow 3–4 hours for the entire island visit.

Sanjiang National Nature Reserve (三江自然保护区)

Three Rivers Wetland — 1,980km², 200+ Bird Species, "China's Largest Freshwater Wetland System"

The Sanjiang National Nature Reserve (三江自然保护区, Sānjiāng Zìrán Bǎohùqū, "Three Rivers Reserve") is a vast wetland area at the confluence of the Heilongjiang (黑龙江), Ussuri (乌苏里江), and Songhua (松花江) rivers. Covering 1,980 km² of marshes, reed beds, meadows, and shallow lakes, it ranks among the largest freshwater wetland systems in all of China. The reserve is a RAMSAR-designated Wetland of International Importance and a critical stopover for migratory birds on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway — over 200 bird species have been recorded here, including white storks (白鹳, Ciconia ciconia, a "Vulnerable" species on the IUCN Red List with only 2,500–3,000 pairs remaining worldwide), red-crowned cranes (丹顶鹤, Grus japonensis, China's most iconic crane), and several eagle species including the Steller's sea eagle (虎头海雕). The best time for birdwatching is May–June (spring migration) when thousands of birds fill the marshes. Visitors access the wetland via a system of boardwalk trails (5km total) and three observation towers (8m, 12m, and 15m tall) scattered throughout the reserve. The sunset over the flat wetlands is legendary — the sky turns shades of orange, pink, and purple, reflecting off the shallow waters, creating a mirror effect. The autumn scenery (September–October) is equally stunning, with the reed beds turning golden brown against the blue sky. The reserve is about 100 km from Jiamusi city — 2 hours by car. A half-day to full-day trip is recommended. Bring insect repellent, particularly in summer.

Tongjiang Sanjiangkou & Hezhe Culture Village (同江三江口 & 街津口赫哲族文化村)

Tongjiang — Where Two Rivers Meet, AAAA Scenic Area, Hezhe Ethnic Heritage Village

Tongjiang (同江), about 200 km from Jiamusi, offers two major attractions. First, the Sanjiangkou (三江口, "Three Rivers Mouth") is where the Songhua River (松花江) and Heilongjiang River (黑龙江) converge — a spectacular natural phenomenon where the clear blue-green Songhua waters meet the dark brown Heilongjiang waters, creating a visible "mixing zone" that stretches for kilometers downstream. A viewing platform (¥10) at the confluence provides panoramic views, and boat rides (¥80/person, 30 minutes) take you through the mixing zone. A newly completed bridge (2022), the Tongjiang-Nizhneleninskoye Railway Bridge (同江中俄铁路大桥), the first cross-border railway bridge between China and Russia, is visible upstream and adds a modern engineering wonder to the scenery. Second, the Jiejinkou Hezhe Culture Village (街津口赫哲族文化村, Jiējīnkǒu Hèzhézú Wénhuà Cūn), 45km northeast of Tongjiang city, is a living museum of the Hezhe (赫哲) people — one of China's smallest ethnic minorities with only about 5,300 members. The village (AAA-rated) is set in a beautiful location where the Jiejin River meets the Heilongjiang River, with mountains behind and river in front. Here you can experience: the "Hezhe Fish-Skin Clothing Workshop" (鱼皮衣制作坊, free to watch, ¥50 to try making a small fish-skin keychain), where artisans demonstrate the 3,000-year-old tradition of sewing clothing from salmon skin — a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage skill involving tanning, smoking, and sewing up to 100 fish skins to make a single coat; the "Yimakan Performance" (伊玛堪说唱, weekends 7:30–8:30pm, ¥50/person including dinner), a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage epic storytelling tradition combining singing and narration, performed by the few remaining elders who still speak the Hezhe language; and the "Fish Banquet Restaurant" (鱼宴餐厅, ¥60–80/person), serving 8–10 traditional Hezhe fish dishes including "Shasheng Fish" (刹生鱼), a raw fish dish similar to sashimi but with Hezhe-style spicy vinegar sauce. Entry to the culture village: ¥30 (students ¥15). Open 8:00am–5:00pm. Allow 3–4 hours including travel from Tongjiang.

Shuiyuanshan Park (水源山公园)

Water Source Mountain Park — AAA-Rated Urban Park, Zoo & Northeast Tiger Enclosure

Shuiyuanshan Park (水源山公园, Shuǐyuánshān Gōngyuán, "Water Source Mountain Park"), located in southeastern Jiamusi (前进区, 3km from the city center), is the city's largest urban park and a AAA-rated scenic area. Covering 64 hectares with an elevation of 113.8 meters, the park is divided into 12 scenic zones including: a "Gate Square" with ornamental flower beds; the "Panorama Pavilion" (眺望阁), an 8-meter-tall pagoda atop the hill offering 360° views of Jiamusi city and the distant Songhua River; the "Bird Garden" with 100+ species including peacocks, pheasants, and cranes; the "Wildlife Zone" featuring a Northeast Tiger Enclosure (东北虎园) with 6 Siberian tigers (Amur tigers), the park's main attraction — viewing is from an elevated walkway (¥10 extra) for safety and best visibility; and the "Ferris Wheel" (摩天轮, 30 meters tall, ¥20, open 9:00am–8:00pm summer), offering another excellent city view from above. The park also has a small petting zoo where children can feed deer (¥10 for carrots). The park attracted nearly 400,000 visitors in 2024. In winter (December–February), the park hosts a "Snow Lantern Festival" (冰雪花灯节) with ice sculptures and illuminated displays, and in summer (July–August), the flower gardens — particularly the sunflower and lavender sections — are in full bloom. The park is accessible by bus #2, #6, #8 (¥2) from downtown, or a 10-minute taxi ride (¥8–12).

Jiamusi Museum & British Consulate Site (佳木斯博物馆 & 英国领事馆旧址)

Jiamusi Museum — 10,000+ Artifacts, Hezhe Culture, Beidahuang Spirit & Historical Architecture

The Jiamusi Museum (佳木斯博物馆, Jiāmùsī Bówùguǎn) is located in the city center at No. 100 Qingzhen Street, Qianjin District (前进区清真街100号), housed in a building that was originally the British Consulate (英国领事馆旧址, Yīngguó Lǐngshìguǎn Jiùzhǐ) — a 2-story European-style brick building constructed in 1910 when Jiamusi was a treaty port for foreign trade. The consulate building itself is a cultural relic protected at the provincial level, with distinctive red-brick walls, arched windows, and a mansard roof. The museum, established in 2005, houses 10,000+ artifacts across three main halls: the "Historical Hall" (历史厅, covering Jiamusi's development from a small Qing Dynasty fishing village to a modern industrial city, with artifacts including Neolithic stone tools found in the region, 1,000-year-old porcelain from the Liao Dynasty, and late-Qing trade documents from the Russian border trade era); the "Hezhe Culture Hall" (赫哲族文化厅, the museum's standout section, with 500+ artifacts showcasing the Hezhe people's unique fish-skin clothing, birch-bark canoes (桦皮船), fishing implements, and 200+ historic photographs documenting their way of life along the rivers); and the "Beidahuang Hall" (北大荒厅, dedicated to the land reclamation movement (北大荒, "Great Northern Wilderness") of the 1950s–1970s, when hundreds of thousands of soldiers and educated youth (知青, zhīqīng, "sent-down youth") turned the previously uninhabited marshes of Heilongjiang into productive farmland — with original tools, photographs, and personal diaries on display). The museum also features a small "Zhiqing Square" (知青广场) outside the museum, a public plaza commemorating the sent-down youth who built modern Jiamusi, with bronze statues and a memorial wall. Entry to the museum is FREE (ID required). Open 9:00am–4:30pm (closed Mondays). The museum is a 5-minute walk from the central square (市中心广场). Allow 1–2 hours.

Lotus Island (莲花岛)

Lotus Island — Songhua River Island Park, Summer Lotus Blossoms, City Skyline Views

Lotus Island (莲花岛, Liánhuā Dǎo) is a small island in the Songhua River (松花江), directly across from central Jiamusi city. The island gets its name from the dense lotus plants (荷花) that bloom in its central pond during July and August, creating a spectacular sea of pink and white lotus flowers covering nearly 2 hectares of the island's surface. A 2km circular walking trail (环岛步道) encircles the island, passing several viewing platforms that offer excellent views of the Jiamusi city skyline across the river — particularly beautiful at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. The island is a favorite among local residents for morning exercise (tai chi groups gather at 6–7 AM) and evening strolls. There are no commercial outlets on the island, so bring your own water and snacks. Access is by ferry from the "Jiamusi Ferry Terminal" (佳木斯渡口, Jiamusi Dùkǒu) near the city center — the ferry runs every 20–30 minutes (¥5/person, 10-minute crossing). Alternatively, during winter (December–February), when the river freezes completely, you can walk across the ice to the island (be sure to follow established paths — marked by local fishermen — for safety). The island is best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the best light for photography.

Fujin Jindong Reservoir & Huanan Primitive Forest (富锦金东水库 & 桦南原始森林)

Jindong Reservoir — Scenic Hilly Reservoir, Photography Paradise, 60km from Jiamusi

Two excellent options for day trips from Jiamusi. Jindong Reservoir (金东水库, Jīndōng Shuǐkù) is located in Fujin city (富锦市), 60km northeast of Jiamusi. This rare hilly-type reservoir on the otherwise flat Sanjiang Plain sits at the base of rolling hills covered with golden rapeseed flower fields (油菜花田) that bloom in July–August, creating spectacular photo opportunities with the reservoir's mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding landscape. The reservoir has a 2km observation boardwalk and a small dock where local fishermen sell their catch. It's best visited at dawn (5:00–6:30 AM) for sunrise reflections, or at sunset (4:30–6:00 PM) when the water turns golden-orange. A self-drive via the Jiafu Expressway (佳富高速) takes about 45 minutes. Free entry. Meanwhile, the Huanan Primitive Forest (桦南原始森林, Huànán Yuánshǐ Sēnlín) lies in Huanan County (桦南县), 40km south of Jiamusi — a 1,000-hectare remnant of the Wandashan Mountain Range (完达山脉)'s ancient primary forest, with towering trees (some 300+ years old, reaching 30–40 meters tall), clear forest streams, and a 5km network of hiking paths. The forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers in spring (May–June) and thick layers of colorful fallen leaves in autumn (September–October). Moss-covered rocks and fallen logs create an almost primeval atmosphere. Accessible from Huanan County driving 20 minutes to the "Qiliang Forest Farm" (七良林场) entrance. Entry: ¥20. Open 8:00am–5:00pm (best visited June–October). Allow 2–3 hours for hiking. Bring insect repellent in summer and wear long pants for protection.
