Korean Culture • Border Region • Changbai Mountain
Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (延边朝鲜族自治州), established in 1952, is one of China's most unique regions—a homeland for ethnic Koreans (40% of the prefecture's 2.1 million population) where Korean is an official language alongside Mandarin. Street signs in Yanji (prefecture capital) are bilingual (Chinese + Korean), K-pop music fills the air, and Korean BBQ restaurants line every street. The prefecture borders North Korea along the Tumen River (图们江, 232km border) and includes Hunchun Fangchuan (珲春防川)—a rare tripoint where China, Russia, and North Korea meet (visible from one observation deck). Changbai Mountain's South Slope (长白山南坡) offers a less-crowded alternative to the popular North Slope (accessible from Yanji in 5 hours). Yanbian is also historically significant: the legendary founder of Korea, Dangun, is said to have been born at Heaven Lake (天池) on Changbai Mountain, making this region sacred to all Koreans. For food lovers, Yanji offers the most authentic Korean cuisine in China—better than Koreatowns in Beijing or Shanghai, and arguably more authentic than Pyongyang restaurants in China because it's an entire city of ethnic Koreans cooking their ancestral recipes. The prefecture is served by Yanji Chaoyangchuan Airport (YNJ) with flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Seoul. High-speed rail from Changchun takes 2 hours (¥70).
Yanji (延吉), the prefecture capital, is often described as "more Korean than Koreatowns in Western cities"—it's an entire city of 600,000 people where 40% are ethnic Korean, street signs are bilingual (Chinese + Korean), and Korean pop music fills the air. Key experiences: (1) West Market (西市场, 9:00–21:00)—the city's largest Korean street food market with 200+ stalls selling cold noodles (naengmyeon, ¥15), rice cakes (tteokbokki, ¥12), blood sausage (sundae, ¥10), Korean fried chicken (¥28), and kimchi (¥5/jar); (2) Korean BBQ Street (朝阳街烧烤一条街, 1km long)—50+ restaurants serving premium beef/pork grilled at your table (¥40–80/person); (3) Yanbian University (延边大学, founded 1949)—the only university in China where Korean is the primary instructional language, with a beautiful Korean-style campus (visitors can walk around the grounds); (4) Korean Specialty Shops (河南街)—selling kimchi, gochujang, Korean cosmetics, and imported goods from South Korea; (5) Tumen River Park (图们江公园, 3km from city center)—riverside walk with North Korea visible in the distance. The city comes alive at night (18:00–23:00) with neon lights and night markets. Allow 1–2 days for food and cultural exploration. Yanji is 2 hours from Changchun by HSR (¥70) and served by flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Seoul. The city is a 10-minute taxi from Yanji Airport (¥15–20).
Hours: City always accessible; West Market 9:00–21:00; BBQ Street 11:00–23:00.
Admission: Free (city access); West Market free to enter.
Getting there: Yanji is the prefecture capital—accessible by HSR (2 hours from Changchun, ¥70), flights (YNJ Airport, 15 min from city center by taxi ¥15–20), or bus from all major Jilin cities. The city center is walkable; taxis start at ¥5.
Tip: 40% ethnic Korean population—most authentic Korean food in China. West Market (西市场) has 200+ stalls—cold noodles ¥15, rice cakes ¥12. Korean BBQ Street (朝阳街) has 50+ restaurants (¥40–80/person). Yanbian University (延边大学) is Korea's only university in China. The city is 2 hours from Changchun by HSR—perfect for a weekend food trip. Allow 1–2 days. Best months: June–October (pleasant weather) or December–February (hearty winter stews).
The Tumen River (图们江) forms a 232km border between Yanbian and North Korea, and the city of Tumen (图们市, 70km from Yanji) is the best place to observe North Korea across the river. From the Tumen River Bridge viewpoint (图们江大桥观景点, open 8:00–17:00, ¥20), you can see North Korean villages, farms, and occasionally border guards on the opposite bank (within 50 meters). The contrast is striking: the Chinese side has paved roads, high-rise buildings, and neon lights; the North Korean side has simple houses, limited electricity, and agricultural fields. Boat tours (¥50–80, 40 minutes) take you upstream along the border (within Chinese waters, 30–50 meters from the North Korean shore). The Tumen city also has a "Border Museum" (边境博物馆, 9:00–17:00, closed Mondays, free) displaying historical photos of the China-NK border, artifacts from Korean War (1950–1953), and information about ethnic Koreans in China. A more remote but dramatic border viewpoint is at "Fangchuan" (防川, see separate attraction below)—where China, Russia, and North Korea meet. Allow half-day (4–5 hours) for Tumen city. Tumen is 70km from Yanji—bus ¥15 (1.5 hours) or taxi ¥80–100 (1 hour). Bring a telephoto lens (200mm+) for border photography.
Hours: Viewpoints always accessible (24/7); Boat tours 8:00–17:00 (May–October).

Tip: 232km border with North Korea. Tumen city (70km from Yanji) offers the best views—within 50 meters of NK shore. Boat tours ¥50–80 (40 min). "Border Museum" (free, closed Mondays) has Korean War artifacts. The contrast: Chinese side developed, NK side rural/simple. Bring telephoto lens (200mm+). Tumen is 70km from Yanji—bus ¥15 or taxi ¥80–100. Combine with Fangchuan (防川, 60km further) for a full "Three Borders" day trip.
Fangchuan (防川), located in Hunchun city (珲春市, 120km from Yanji), is one of Asia's most unusual geographical points—from a single observation deck (Lianhua Peak 莲花峰, 20m high), you can see China, Russia, and North Korea simultaneously. The Tumen River flows into the Sea of Japan (East Sea) just 15km away, but China's access to the sea is blocked by a narrow strip of Russian territory (less than 100 meters wide at the "Tumen River Estuary"). The "One-Eye-Three-Countries" observation deck (一眼望三国观景台, ¥30) offers a panoramic view: China to the west, Russia's Primorsky Krai to the north (visible villages and a church), and North Korea's Rajin-Sonbong Special Economic Zone to the east (visible factories and a port). The site includes a monument inscribed "Easternmost Point of China" (中国东方第一哨, built 1992) and a small museum (防川边境博物馆, 9:00–17:00, ¥20) explaining the region's complex border history. In summer (June–August), the area is lush and green; in autumn (September–October), the forests turn golden. Allow 2–3 hours. Fangchuan is 120km from Yanji—taxi ¥150–180 (2 hours) or bus from Yanji to Hunchun (2.5 hours, ¥20), then taxi ¥40–50 (40 min). The tripoint is especially interesting for history and geography enthusiasts.
Hours: 8:00–17:00 (April–October); 9:00–16:00 (November–March).
Admission: Observation deck ¥30; Museum ¥20.
Getting there: Located in Hunchun city, 120km from Yanji. Taxi ¥150–180 (2 hours). Bus from Yanji to Hunchun (2.5 hours, ¥20), then taxi ¥40–50 (40 min). Address: Fangchuan Scenic Area, Hunchun City (珲春市防川风景区).
Tip: Rare tripoint—see China, Russia, and North Korea from one deck (Lianhua Peak 莲花峰, 20m high). "Easternmost Point of China" monument (1992). Museum ¥20 explains complex border history. 120km from Yanji—taxi ¥150–180. The Tumen River flows into Sea of Japan just 15km away but China's sea access is blocked by Russian territory (100m wide strip). Best for geography/history enthusiasts. September–October offers golden autumn views.
The South Slope (南坡) of Changbai Mountain is the least-visited but most scenic route to Heaven Lake (天池), accessible from Changbai Korean Autonomous County (长白朝鲜族自治县, 180km from Yanji). Unlike the busy North Slope (150km from Baishan), the South Slope has fewer tour groups and offers a more tranquil experience—the lake is visible from a 1km boardwalk along the crater rim (the entire lake can be seen, not just a partial view). The South Slope route includes: the "South Slope Entrance" (南坡入口, 1,200m elevation); a shuttle bus (¥85, mandatory) to the lake viewpoint (30 minutes); "Changbai Waterfall" (长白瀑布, 68m high, fed by lake overflow); "Yalu River Source" (鸭绿江源头, a small spring marking the river's origin); and "Alpine Meadow" (高山草甸, 2,000m elevation, wildflowers July–August). The entire route takes 5–6 hours. The South Slope is open June–October only (the road is closed November–May due to snow). Ticket: ¥125 (entry) + ¥85 (shuttle). The South Slope is 180km from Yanji—bus to Changbai County (3 hours, ¥25), then taxi to entrance (20 min, ¥20). Or taxi direct from Yanji ¥300–350 (3 hours). Stay overnight in Changbai County (¥150–300/night) for early morning lake access. The South Slope offers the most complete view of Heaven Lake—all 10km² visible from the rim boardwalk.
