Zhaotong

Zhaotong 昭通 — Gateway to Southern Silk Road — Cranes and Canyons

Zhaotong (昭通) is Yunnan's northern gateway, historically important on the Southern Silk Road connecting Sichuan to Yunnan. The prefecture offers dramatic canyons, wetlands, and one of the world's most important black-necked crane wintering sites.

Dashanbao Wetland (大山包) hosts over 1,000 black-necked cranes each winter — one of the largest gatherings of this endangered species. The Western Grand Canyon offers hot springs and dramatic gorge scenery.

Zhaotong is 300 km from Kunming (4 hours by train). Allow 2-3 days.
