Jiangnan of the West • Grasslands • Sayram Lake • Lavender
Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture (伊犁哈萨克自治州) is widely considered the most beautiful region in Xinjiang — and by many accounts, the most beautiful in all of China. Called the "Jiangnan of the West" (塞外江南) for its surprising lushness, Ili defies every stereotype of arid Central Asia. The Ili River Valley is a vast, fertile basin between the Tianshan Mountains and the Borohoro Mountains, watered by the Ili River — Xinjiang's largest river — creating landscapes of green grasslands, wildflower meadows, pine forests, and alpine lakes that could pass for Switzerland or New Zealand.
The prefecture is home to China's finest grasslands: Nalati (那拉提), Kalajun (喀拉峻), Qiaerma (恰西), and Tangbula (唐布拉) are among the most spectacular alpine meadows on Earth. In summer, these grasslands explode with wildflowers — wild peonies, irises, edelweiss, and dozens of other species carpet the hillsides. The region also produces China's finest lavender — the Ili Lavender Valley near Huocheng blooms purple each June, rivaling Provence, France. The capital city of Yining (伊宁) is one of Xinjiang's most pleasant cities, with tree-lined streets, Russian-influenced architecture, and excellent food.
Ili's culture is shaped by its Kazakh majority — nomadic horsemen who maintain traditions of eagle hunting, horse racing, and pastoral herding that date back centuries. Kazakh yurt camps dot the grasslands; eagle hunters demonstrate their ancient skills; traditional music fills the mountain air. Sayram Lake (赛里木湖), at the prefecture's western edge, is known as the "Last Teardrop of the Atlantic" — a stunning 453km² alpine lake at 2,073 meters. The Guozigou Bridge (果子沟大桥) — a 700-meter-high cable-stayed bridge — is one of the world's most dramatic road structures. And the Khorgos Port (霍尔果斯口岸) is China's busiest land border crossing to Kazakhstan. For travelers, Ili offers everything: world-class mountain scenery, authentic nomadic culture, comfortable cities, and some of the best driving roads in China. Allow at least 4–5 days to explore properly.
Nalati Grassland (那拉提草原) is the most famous grassland in Xinjiang — covering 1,800 square kilometers at 2,200 meters elevation. The name "Nalati" means "first place where the sun appears" in Mongolian — said to have been exclaimed by Genghis Khan's army when they emerged from the mountains into this sun-drenched valley. The grassland is actually three distinct zones: the "Air Grassland" (空中草原) — the highest and most scenic, at 2,200m, reached by a winding mountain road; the "River Valley Grassland" (河谷草原) — along the Kuquesu River; and the "Forest Grassland" (森林草原) — where pine forests meet meadows. The Air Grassland is the highlight — a vast, gently sloping meadow with the snow-capped Tianshan as backdrop.
Nalati is famous for Kazakh horse culture. The Nalati Kazakh Horse Racing (那拉提赛马) takes place throughout summer, with horse races, sheep-catching games on horseback, and eagle hunting demonstrations. Visitors can ride Kazakh horses (¥50–100/30 min) across the meadow — the horses are smaller than European breeds but incredibly sturdy and gentle. The grassland also has Kazakh yurt camps (毡房营地) where you can stay overnight (¥200–400/night). The Nalati Scenic Area also includes the Kuquesu River Canyon — a 20km river gorge with waterfalls and swimming spots.
Nalati is 200 km east of Yining, about 3 hours by car via G218 highway. Best season: June–August when the grassland is green and wildflowers bloom. The shuttle bus (¥60) is mandatory — the scenic area is too large to walk. Allow 4–6 hours minimum. Stay overnight in a Kazakh yurt (¥200–400/night) for the full experience. Pro tip: The Air Grassland (空中草原) is reached by a separate road 10 km before the main entrance — most tour buses go to the River Valley zone, missing the best view. The yurt breakfast (8:00–9:00 AM) in the meadow, with fresh yogurt, naan, and horse milk, is unforgettable.
Hours: 9:00–20:00 (summer), 10:00–18:00 (winter). Admission: ¥95 (scenic area) + ¥60 (shuttle bus mandatory). Horse riding: ¥50–100/30 min. Transport: 200 km east of Yining. Private car ¥300–500 round trip. Bus from Yining (¥50, 3 hours, 3 departures daily).
Sayram Lake (赛里木湖) is often called the "Last Teardrop of the Atlantic" (大西洋最后一滴眼泪) — the lake's water comes from the only Atlantic weather system that reaches Central Asia, falling as rain over this high mountain lake. The lake covers 453 square kilometers at 2,073 meters elevation, making it the highest mountain lake in Xinjiang (and larger than 95% of China's lakes). The water is an extraordinary crystal-clear turquoise blue, surrounded by snow-capped peaks on all sides. A 90-kilometer scenic highway circles the entire lake, with dozens of viewpoints.
The lake is famous for its wildflower meadows (June–July) — the south shore has the most spectacular display, with yellow wildflowers in June and purple ones in July creating a carpet of color against the blue lake. The lake also has over 120 bird species, including whooper swans, bar-headed geese, and black-necked cranes. The lake reflection of the surrounding peaks on calm mornings (7:00–9:00 AM) is one of the most photographed scenes in Xinjiang. The east shore is best for sunset photos, the south shore for wildflowers, and the north shore for solitude (90% of tourists visit the east shore).
Sayram Lake is 120 km west of Yining, about 1.5 hours by car via G30 expressway. It's on the way between Yining and Bortala. Best season: June–September (10–25°C, road clear). The lake freezes in winter (−30°C) and is accessible for ice trekking. Allow 3–6 hours for the full loop. Pro tip: The morning light (7:00–9:00 AM) is best for reflecting the peaks in the lake — the wind picks up by midday, ruining mirror reflections. The wildflower meadows on the south shore peak around June 15–30 — plan your visit accordingly. Entry to the scenic area includes the 90km circle road with shuttle stops.
Hours: 9:00–20:00 (summer), 10:00–17:00 (winter). Admission: ¥70 (includes scenic area + shuttle bus). Self-driving the loop: ¥150/car (additional). Transport: 120 km west of Yining. Private car ¥200–300 round trip. Bus from Yining (¥40, 1.5 hours, 3 departures daily).
Kalajun Grassland (喀拉峻草原) is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Central Asia — a "3D grassland" where the meadow follows dramatic mountain contours, creating an effect like a living topographic map. The grassland covers 2,800 square kilometers at 2,800 meters elevation, with the Kalajun River carving deep gorges through the meadow. The name "Kalajun" means "black grassland" in Kazakh — the soil is black, rich in minerals, producing unusually lush grass. The grassland is known as the "body art grassland" (人体草原) because from a distance, the hills' curves resemble a woman's body.
Kalajun is divided into five scenic zones: East Kalajun (东喀拉峻) — the main visitor area with the best views; West Kalajun (西喀拉峻) — wilder and less visited; Kuksu Karst Peak (库克苏石林) — a limestone karst formation; Qiaerma Valley (恰西) — a parallel valley with pine forests; and Kazakh Yurt Village (哈萨克毡房村) — a demonstration yurt village with traditional handicrafts. The grassland is home to over 300 Kazakh families who maintain traditional seasonal migration patterns. The best photography is at sunset (8:00–9:00 PM summer) when the grassland's curves are illuminated by low-angle light.
Kalajun is 60 km southeast of Tekes County (特克斯县), about 120 km from Yining (2 hours by car). Best season: June–August when the grassland is green and wildflowers bloom. Allow 4–6 hours. Combine with Tekes County (the "Bagua City" — 八卦城) — the only city in China built in a Bagua (Eight Trigrams) layout, with no traffic lights. Pro tip: The sunset over the "body art" hills (8:30–9:00 PM summer) at East Kalajun's viewpoint is one of the most photographed scenes in Xinjiang. Bring a telephoto lens (70–200mm) to capture the contours. The Tekes night market (20:00–24:00) is excellent for dinner after visiting Kalajun.
Hours: 9:00–20:00 (summer), 10:00–17:00 (winter). Admission: ¥80 (scenic area) + ¥50 (shuttle bus). Transport: 120 km from Yining. Private car ¥250–400 round trip. Bus from Yining to Tekes (¥30, 2 hours, 4 departures daily), then taxi ¥50 to Kalajun.
Yining City (伊宁市), the capital of Ili Prefecture, is one of Xinjiang's most pleasant and culturally rich cities. The city is famous for Kazanqi Folk Street (喀赞其民俗街) — a neighborhood of blue-washed Uyghur courtyard houses, narrow alleys, and traditional handicraft workshops. The name "Kazanqi" means "cauldron-maker" in Uyghur — historically this was the district where metalworkers, tinsmiths, and cauldron makers lived. Today, the streets are lined with brightly painted houses — predominantly blue and white, with carved wooden doors, vine-covered trellises, and flower-filled courtyards. Horse-drawn carriages (哈迪克, ¥20/person) clatter through the streets.
The Six-Star Street (六星街, Sixing Street) is a unique neighborhood laid out in a Soviet-era radial plan — six roads radiating from a central roundabout, creating a star-shaped block pattern. The architecture here is an eclectic blend of Russian, Uyghur, and Soviet Modernist styles — wooden balconies, pastel colors, and carved window frames. The area is known for its artisan bakeries (Russian-style bread, ¥8–12/loaf), Uyghur tea houses, and small galleries. The Yili River (伊犁河) flows through the city — the Yili River Bridge (伊犁河大桥) is a popular spot for sunset walks (8:00–9:00 PM summer), where local families gather to socialize.
Kazanqi and Six-Star Street are in central Yining, walking distance from each other (2 km). Allow 2–4 hours for both neighborhoods. Best visited in late afternoon and evening (16:00–21:00) when the light is golden and streets are lively. Kazanqi is free to walk through (you're walking through a working-class neighborhood, not a tourist attraction). The Kazanqi Welcome Gate (喀赞其迎宾门) has a small square with local musicians and a fountain. Pro tip: Buy Russian bread (列巴, ¥8–12/loaf) from Six-Star Street bakeries — it's excellent. The Yili River sunset (8:30–9:00 PM summer) is one of Xinjiang's most underrated experiences — bring tea and sit on the bridge steps with locals.
Hours: Kazanqi: 24/7 (neighborhood). Six-Star Street: 24/7.
Admission: Free.
Location: Central Yining (伊宁市中心). Walking from Yining People's Square (人民广场) 10–15 min. Taxi ¥8–10 from any hotel.
Guozigou (果子沟, "Fruit Valley") is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in China — a 28-kilometer-long valley carved by the Guozigou River through the Tianshan Mountains. The valley's name comes from the wild fruit trees that cover its slopes — apricots, apples, pears, and hawthorns that bloom white and pink in April–May and turn golden in autumn. The valley is famous for the Guozigou Bridge (果子沟大桥) — a 700-meter cable-stayed bridge spanning the valley at a height of 200 meters above the river. The bridge, completed in 2011, is one of the highest in China and a marvel of modern engineering — its elegant white cables and green valley backdrop create one of the most photographed road scenes in Xinjiang.
The valley runs between Sayram Lake (north entrance) and Huocheng County (south entrance), forming the western gateway to Ili Prefecture. The G30 expressway winds through the valley for 28 km, passing under the massive bridge and through 5 tunnels. The valley has multiple viewpoints where you can pull over and photograph the bridge and mountains. The best photography spot is the valley floor viewpoint (2 km before the bridge's south end) — you can frame the bridge against the mountains and river. The valley also has wild fruit picking (July–September) — locals sell wild apricots, apples, and pears at roadside stands (¥10–20/kg).
Guozigou is on the G30 expressway between Sayram Lake and Huocheng, about 100 km west of Yining (1.5 hours by car). The valley is driving-through access — you pass through on the expressway, pulling over at designated viewpoints. Allow 30–60 minutes driving+viewing. The valley is free to drive through — no admission fee. Best seasons: April–May for wild fruit blossoms (white/pink flowers covering the valley). September–October for golden leaves and wild fruit harvest. Pro tip: The better photo angle is from the valley floor, not the bridge itself. Drive to the parking area 2 km before the bridge's south end and walk 5 minutes to the riverbank — the bridge towers majestically overhead. The sunset (8:00–9:00 PM summer) light hits the bridge cables beautifully.
Hours: 24/7 (expressway). Viewpoint parking: 24/7.
Admission: Free (driving through view).
Location: Between Sayram Lake (north) and Huocheng (south), on G30 expressway. 100 km west of Yining.
The Lavender Valley (薰衣草谷) in Huocheng County (霍城县), 50 km west of Yining, is China's largest lavender production area — covering 600+ square kilometers of lavender fields. Ili's lavender is the same species (Lavandula angustifolia) as Provence's, and the region's climate (1,800 hours of sunshine annually, cold winters, well-drained soil) produces lavender oil of comparable quality. The primary bloom season is June 10–July 10, with the peak around June 15–25 when the fields are at their most intensely purple. The sight of row upon row of purple lavender stretching to the Tianshan foothills is one of China's most beautiful agricultural landscapes.
The main fields are in Lavender Valley Scenic Area (薰衣草谷景区) and the surrounding towns of San Gong Township (三宫乡) and Lu Cheng Town (芦草沟镇). The scenic area has a lavender museum, distillation workshop, and gift shop selling lavender oil (¥50–100/10ml), dried lavender sachets (¥10–15), and lavender honey (¥30–50/jar). The fields are also home to bee farms (lavender honey is famous throughout China). The Huocheng Lavender Festival (June 15–25) features Uyghur and Kazakh dance performances, local food stalls, and special admission discounts. The smell of lavender fills the air for kilometers around.
Huocheng is 50 km west of Yining, about 1 hour by car via G30 expressway. Best season: June 10–July 10 (peak June 15–25). Outside bloom season, the fields are green but not spectacular. Allow 2–3 hours. Combine with Guozigou Bridge (30 km north) and Khorgos Port (30 km west) for a full western Ili day trip. Pro tip: The best photography time is sunrise (6:00–7:30 AM) and sunset (8:00–9:00 PM) when the purple fields glow in golden light. The fields near San Gong Township are less crowded and more photogenic than the main scenic area. Buy lavender oil (¥50–100/10ml) directly from farmers — it's 50–70% cheaper than at the scenic area gift shop, and you can watch the distillation process.
Hours: Fields: 24/7 (free access). Scenic Area: 9:00–20:00 (summer). Admission: Fields: free. Scenic Area: ¥40 (June only, includes museum). Transport: 50 km west of Yining. Private car ¥150–200 round trip. Bus from Yining (¥15, 1 hour, frequent departures).
Khorgos Port (霍尔果斯口岸) is China's busiest land border crossing to Kazakhstan and one of the busiest in Central Asia — processing over 20 million tons of cargo annually. The port has operated for over 2,000 years — it was a major Silk Road crossing point, connecting China to the Kazakh steppes and Central Asia. Today, the port features a massive duty-free market (霍尔果斯免税市场) — 3 square kilometers of shops selling Kazakh and Central Asian goods: chocolate, vodka, honey, wool carpets, fur hats, and handmade crafts. Chinese customs regulations allow ¥8,000 of duty-free goods per person — making it a popular shopping destination.
The port is divided into China Customs Zone (accessible to all) and Free Trade Zone (跨境合作中心) — a special area where Chinese and Kazakh citizens can cross visa-free for 30 days. International travelers need a valid Chinese visa with multiple entries. The Khorgos Border Viewing Platform (国门观景台) offers views of the two countries' border gates — Kazakhstan's blue-and-gold gate and China's red-and-gold gate, connected by a white bridge. The border marker #324 is a popular photo spot. The port also has the New Silk Road Museum (新丝路博物馆) explaining the region's trade history.
Khorgos is 80 km west of Yining, about 1.5 hours by car via G30 expressway. Allow 2–3 hours. Combine with Lavender Valley (30 km east) and Guozigou Bridge (50 km east) for a full day trip from Yining. Bring your passport — you'll need it to enter the Free Trade Zone. Pro tip: The duty-free Kazakh chocolate (哈萨克巧克力, ¥5–10/bar) is excellent and makes perfect souvenirs. The Kazakh honey (哈萨克蜂蜜, ¥30–50/jar) is also highly regarded. Border viewing platform is free — the photo of the two nations' gates is a unique keepsake. The border market opens 10:00 AM–8:00 PM — busy in the morning, quieter after 4:00 PM.
Hours: Customs: 24/7. Duty-Free Market: 10:00–20:00 (summer), 10:00–18:00 (winter). Border Viewing Platform: 24/7.
Admission: Border Viewing Platform: free. Free Trade Zone entry: free with passport.
Transport: 80 km west of Yining. Private car ¥200–300 round trip. Bus from Yining (¥20, 1.5 hours, 5 departures daily).
Xiate Ancient Trail (夏塔古道, also Shata Ancient Trail) is one of the most dramatic hiking routes in China — a 2,000-year-old Silk Road pass that crosses the Tianshan Mountains from the Ili Valley to the Tarim Basin. The trail was used by Buddhist monks, Silk Road traders, and imperial armies for millennia. Today, the Xiate Scenic Area (夏塔景区) preserves the first 50 km of the trail, passing through forested valleys, alpine meadows, and ending at the foot of the Muzart Glacier (木扎尔特冰川) — a massive glacier descending from 6,635-meter Muzart Peak. The trail is particularly famous for wildflowers (June–July) — edelweiss, gentians, and wild irises carpet the meadows.
The scenic area includes: Xiate Hot Springs (夏塔温泉) — natural hot springs at 2,400m (¥30–50/person); Xiate River Valley — a 50km valley with pine forests and waterfalls; Xiate Grassland (夏塔草原) — a high alpine meadow with Kazakh yurts; and the Muzart Glacier viewpoint — a 3-hour hike from the end of the road. The trail is hikeable by moderately fit travelers — the full route to the glacier is 10 km (one way) from the parking lot, taking 3–4 hours. The Xiate Loop (夏塔环线, 5 days) is the complete ancient trail crossing the Tianshan — for experienced hikers with gear and a guide.
Xiate is 220 km west of Yining via Zhaosu County (昭苏县), about 3.5 hours by car. Best season: June–September (trail accessible, 15–25°C in the valley). Allow a full day for the day hike. Stay overnight in Zhaosu County (¥150–250/night) or at the Xiate Hot Springs guesthouse (¥200–350/night). Pro tip: The morning light (7:00–9:00 AM) on the Muzart Glacier is spectacular. Start hiking by 7:00 AM to reach the glacier viewpoint before cloud cover builds (usually by 11:00 AM). Bring warm clothing — even in July, the glacier area can be 5–10°C. The Xiate Hot Springs are perfect after the hike — natural pools at 42°C with mountain views.
Hours: Xiate Scenic Area: 9:00–18:00 (summer), closed in winter. Admission: ¥40 (scenic area) + ¥30 (shuttle bus to trailhead). Transport: 220 km west of Yining via Zhaosu. Private car ¥400–600 round trip. Bus from Yining to Zhaosu (¥50, 3 hours, 2 departures daily), then taxi ¥100 to Xiate.
By Air: Yining Airport (YIN, 伊宁机场) is 5 km north of the city center — one of the closest airports to a city center in China. Flights connect to Urumqi (1 hour, ¥400–600, 6 departures daily), Beijing (3 hours, ¥1,200–1,800), Shanghai, and other cities. Taxi from airport to city: ¥15–20 (5 min).
By High-Speed Rail: Yining Railway Station (伊宁站) is on the Jinghe–Yining–Khorgos Railway. Urumqi → Yining: 5 hours (¥200–350, 4 departures daily). Yining → Khorgos: 1.5 hours (¥30–50, 6 departures daily). The station is 8 km from city (taxi ¥20–25).
By Road: Yining is 700 km southwest of Urumqi via G30 expressway (8-hour drive). Sayram Lake → Yining: 120 km, 1.5 hours. Yining → Nalati: 200 km, 3 hours. Yining → Khorgos: 80 km, 1.5 hours. Self-driving is essential for exploring Ili's scattered attractions — rental cars available in Yining (¥200–300/day). The G30, G218, and G577 highways connect the main attractions.
Getting Around Yining City: Taxis start at ¥8 (¥1.3/km after 3 km). The city is compact — Kazanqi and Six-Star Street are within walking distance. Bus routes 1, 3, 4, 6 cover main attractions (¥2). Private car hire for a full day: ¥300–500 (covers Lavender Valley + Khorgos + Guozigou).
Attraction Distances from Yining: Kazanqi: city center (0 km). Six-Star Street: 2 km north. Sayram Lake: 120 km west. Guozigou Bridge: 100 km west. Lavender Valley: 50 km west. Khorgos Port: 80 km west. Kalajun Grassland: 120 km southeast (via Tekes). Nalati Grassland: 200 km east. Xiate Trail: 220 km southwest (via Zhaosu). Plan: Day 1 = Yining city (Kazanqi + Six-Star + Yili River sunset). Day 2 = Sayram Lake + Guozigou Bridge + Lavender + Khorgos (loop). Day 3 = Nalati Grassland (overnight yurt). Day 4 = Kalajun + Tekes. Day 5 = Xiate Trail (full day from Yining).
Best Season to Visit: June–September (15–30°C, grasslands green, lavender blooms). June 15–25 is the absolute peak — lavender at its most purple, Sayram Lake wildflowers, and warm temperatures. September offers golden grasslands and comfortable hiking. April–May for wild fruit blossoms in Guozigou. Winter (December–February) is cold (−15°C) but Sayram Lake's frozen blue ice is unique.
