Jinnan 津南区 — Military Heritage, Education Hub & Ancient Water Towns
Jinnan District (津南区) occupies the southeastern gateway of Tianjin, covering 401 km² with a population of about 900,000. The name "Jinnan" means "South of the Tianjin" — the district stretches along the southern bank of the Haihe River, forming a vital corridor connecting Tianjin's urban core with the Binhai New Area. Jinnan is a district of remarkable contrasts and deep historical significance. It is the birthplace of China's military modernization — the Xiaozhan Drill Ground (小站练兵园), where Yuan Shikai trained China's first Western-style "New Army" in 1895, fundamentally transforming the nation's armed forces. The district also preserves the ancient water town of Gegu (葛沽古镇), a 600-year-old Grand Canal port that was once one of the busiest trading posts in northern China. In striking contrast, Jinnan is home to the Haihe Education Park (海河教育园区), a 37 km² state-of-the-art educational complex housing Tianjin University's Beiyang Campus, Nankai University's Jinnan Campus, and over a dozen other institutions, making it one of the largest and most modern university districts in China. With its mix of ancient water towns, historic military sites, vast forest parks, and world-class educational facilities, Jinnan offers visitors a uniquely diverse day-trip experience from central Tianjin.
Xiaozhan Drill Ground is the single most important historic site in Jinnan District — the birthplace of China's modern military. Established in 1895 during the late Qing Dynasty, this is where Yuan Shikai (袁世凯), then a rising military officer, established the "New Army" (新军) — the first Chinese military force trained exclusively on Western methods, with German weapons, modern drill formations, and professional officer training replacing the traditional Qing Banner system. The results were transformative: the New Army became the most effective military force in China, and its veterans went on to dominate Chinese military and political life for decades — including Yuan Shikai himself, who briefly became President of the Republic in 1912. The site today preserves the original 10,000 square meter drill ground, complete with reconstructed barracks, officers' quarters, and training facilities that meticulously recreate the late Qing atmosphere. The Xiaozhan Military Museum (小站练兵博物馆) houses over 500 artifacts including original German Mauser rifles, officers' swords, Qing Dynasty military uniforms, period photographs of the New Army in training, and documents related to the 1898 Hundred Days' Reform. A particularly interesting exhibit reconstructs Yuan Shikai's office. The complex also includes a small temple (built by Yuan to secure his soldiers' loyalty) and a display of the military banners used by the different regiments. The surrounding Xiaozhan town maintains a historic character with traditional Tianjin courtyard houses and workers' cottages from the Republican era. The site is about 15 km southeast of central Jinnan — accessible via bus 131 from Balitai station. Allow 2–3 hours. The museum has good English signage. The drill ground occasionally hosts re-enactments of Qing Dynasty military drills during major holidays (¥20 extra). The town of Xiaozhan is also famous throughout China for its Xiaozhan rice (小站稻), a premium variety of japonica rice that has been cultivated here since the Ming Dynasty — look for it at local restaurants.
Hours: 8:30–17:00 daily
Admission: ¥50 adults, ¥25 students/seniors
Recommended Duration: 2–3 hours
The Haihe Education Park is one of China's largest and most ambitious educational complexes, covering 37 square kilometers along the southern bank of the Haihe River. Conceived in 2009 and opened in stages from 2015, the park was designed as a national demonstration project for educational innovation and urban-rural integration. Today, it houses over 15 institutions with a combined student population of over 150,000, making it one of the largest higher education districts in China. The park's anchor institutions are three national powerhouses: Tianjin University's Beiyang Campus (天津大学北洋园校区, 433 hectares), Nankai University's Jinnan Campus (南开大学津南校区, 300 hectares), and Tianjin Sino-German University of Applied Sciences (天津中德应用技术大学). The park's design is remarkable for its integration: all campuses share a central library system, sports facilities, a central lake (中央湿地湖, 10 hectares), and a commercial district with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The entire park is connected by a network of bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways that weave through green corridors, artificial wetlands, and landscaped gardens. The architecture throughout the park is striking — each university's buildings reflect its institutional identity while harmonizing with the overall design. Tianjin University's Beiyang Campus features a 125-meter-long "Time Corridor" (时间长廊) that chronicles the university's history from 1895. Nankai University's campus incorporates traditional Chinese garden elements. The central lake area is particularly beautiful at sunset and is popular with students for evening walks and social gatherings. The park's commercial hub (知学园商业区) has a wide variety of restaurants (¥15–40/meal), coffee shops, and convenience stores. Visitors can walk freely through the campuses, but should show ID at the main gates during term time. Academic terms (September–January, February–July) bring the park to life with student activity. August is quietest (summer break). Allow 2–4 hours for a walking tour of the central area and lake.
Hours: 24 hours (public areas); individual campuses 6:00–22:00
Admission: Free
Recommended Duration: 2–4 hours
Gegu Ancient Town is a historic water town with over 600 years of history, located on the banks of the Grand Canal (大运河) about 8 km east of central Jinnan. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Gegu was one of the most important trading ports on the Grand Canal's northern section, handling shipments of grain, salt, cotton, and tea between southern China and Beijing. At its peak in the early 19th century, over 3,000 boats passed through Gegu daily, earning it the nickname "Little Tianjin" (小天津). The town's historic core preserves this remarkable commercial heritage through its narrow cobblestone streets, well-maintained Qing Dynasty courtyard houses with gray brick walls and upturned eaves, and several buildings that were once merchant guilds, warehouses, and teahouses. The Gegu Mazu Temple (葛沽妈祖庙), originally built in 1368 and rebuilt in 1870, is one of the most important Mazu temples in northern China — reflecting the influence of Fujianese merchants who dominated Gegu's canal trade. The temple complex, with its colorful ceramic roof decorations, carved stone pillars, and towering incense burners, is still active and hosts the Gegu Mazu Cultural Festival (15th–23rd day of the 3rd lunar month, usually April), a week-long celebration with traditional processions, dragon dances, offering ceremonies, and folk performances that attract tens of thousands of participants. On non-festival days, the temple is peaceful and atmospheric. The historic streets surrounding the temple are lined with shops selling local specialties: Gegu dried tofu (葛沽豆腐干, ¥5–10), a local delicacy known for its firm texture and savory flavor; traditional Tianjin pastries; and canal-side handicrafts. The town's waterfront has been revitalized with a riverside promenade offering pleasant walking and views of the canal. Several small restaurants serve traditional Jinnan cuisine (¥30–60/person). Allow 2–3 hours for the historic town including the temple. Gegu is accessible via bus 131 from Balitai station (40 min, ¥3).
Hours: Town 24 hours; Mazu Temple 8:00–17:00 daily
Admission: Free (Town and Temple)
Best season: April for Mazu Festival; otherwise visit spring/autumn for weather
Jinnan Forest Park is a sprawling urban green space covering 260 hectares, making it one of the largest parks in the Tianjin metropolitan area. Established in 2005 as part of Tianjin's "Green City" initiative, the park features diverse landscapes including dense woodlands with over 100,000 trees (poplar, willow, pine, and cypress), open meadows, a 10-hectare central lake, and wetland areas that support rich biodiversity. The park is divided into several zones connected by 15 km of walking and cycling paths. The main trail, a 5 km "Forest Walk" (林荫步道), winds through the densest woodland section and is lined with interpretive panels identifying tree species and local wildlife. The lakeside area features a wooden viewing platform and benches where visitors can watch waterfowl — the lake attracts egrets, herons, and several species of ducks during migration seasons (March–April and October–November). The park also has a well-maintained barbecue zone (烧烤区) with 30 concrete grills, picnic tables, and water taps — bring your own charcoal and food, or buy supplies from vendors at the park entrance on weekends. A children's play area includes swings, slides, and a small climbing structure. Fitness stations with pull-up bars and stretching apparatus are scattered along the paths. The park is particularly beautiful in spring (cherry blossoms in late March–April, magnolias in April) and autumn (the forest turns shades of gold, orange, and red in late October–November). On summer weekends, the park can get quite busy with family picnickers — arrive early (before 9:00am) for the best experience. On weekday mornings, the park is delightfully quiet — you may have entire trails to yourself. The park is free but the barbecue zone requires a ¥20 reservation on weekends via the Jinnan Park WeChat mini-program. The park entrance is on Jinnan Avenue, about 3 km south of Xianshuigu. Take bus 202 from Xianshuigu station. Allow 2–4 hours.
Hours: 6:00–18:00 daily (closes at dusk in winter)
Admission: Free; barbecue zone ¥20 reservation on weekends
Recommended Duration: 2–4 hours
Tianjin University's Beiyang Campus, opened in 2015 within the Haihe Education Park, represents the modern chapter of China's oldest modern university — founded in 1895 as the Imperial Tientsin University (北洋大学堂), making it the first university in Chinese history. The 433-hectare Beiyang Campus is a masterpiece of contemporary university design that blends cutting-edge educational facilities with environmental sustainability. The campus's architectural highlight is the Zheng Dong Library (郑东图书馆), a stunning 56,000 square meter building with a facade of perforated copper panels that create ever-changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day — the building has won multiple architectural awards. The library houses over 2 million volumes and features a grand central reading hall with a sweeping glass roof. The campus's central axis features the "Time Corridor" (时间长廊), a 125-meter covered walkway with glass panels etched with historic photographs and documents tracing the university's journey from 1895 to the present. The campus includes extensive sports facilities: a 10,000-seat stadium, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and a gymnasium that is open to the public during designated hours (¥20–30 per session). The campus has three artificial lakes connected by canals and bridges, creating a serene water landscape. Ginkgo trees line the main academic avenue — the ginkgo turns brilliant gold in late October to early November, creating one of Tianjin's most spectacular autumn displays. The campus's canteens welcome visitors (pay by WeChat/Alipay, ¥15–25 for a full meal) — the food quality is excellent and prices far below city restaurants. The campus is accessible via Metro Line 6 (NKU Jinnan Campus Station) and has multiple bus connections (routes 613, 612). During term time, the campus buzzes with student life; summer and Chinese New Year periods are quieter. Show ID at the main gate for entry. Allow 2–3 hours for a campus walking tour including the library exterior, Time Corridor, and lake area.
Hours: Campus 6:00–22:00; Library exterior only (interior restricted)
Admission: Free (ID required at gate)
Best time: Late October–November for ginkgo avenue
Nankai University's Jinnan Campus, located within the Haihe Education Park adjacent to TJU's Beiyang Campus, opened in 2015 as the university's primary undergraduate campus. Nankai University was founded in 1919 by educators Zhang Boling and Yan Fansun and has long been one of China's most prestigious universities — Premier Zhou Enlai attended here in the 1920s. The 300-hectare Jinnan Campus is distinctive for its architectural approach: the buildings blend traditional Chinese design elements with modern functionality, creating a campus that honors Nankai's century-old heritage while embracing contemporary needs. The campus centerpiece is the Zhou Enlai Statue (周恩来雕像) in the main square — a popular gathering point for students and a must-see for visitors. The Nankai University History Museum (南開大學校史館), housed in a purpose-built building near the square, chronicles the university's journey through war, relocation, and revival, including its wartime merger into the famous Southwest Associated University (国立西南联合大学) in Kunming during WWII (1937–1946). The campus's most distinctive feature is its extensive integration of traditional Chinese gardens: the "Nankai Garden" features a 3-hectare Chinese garden with rockeries, a koi pond, a traditional hexagonal pavilion, and meandering pathways that create a serene academic atmosphere. The campus's central learning complex includes the iconic "Eye of Nankai" (南开之眼) — a circular glass structure housing a multimedia exhibition space. The student activity center hosts regular cultural performances and academic lectures — some are open to the public. The campus's lotus pond (荷花池) is spectacular in July–August when the flowers bloom. The university's canteens, like TJU's, are open to visitors (¥15–25 for a meal). The campus is connected to TJU Beiyang Campus via a pedestrian bridge across the central ring road — you can easily visit both campuses in one afternoon. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the campus including the museum.
Hours: Campus 6:00–22:00; History Museum 9:00–17:00 (Tue–Sun)
Admission: Free (ID required at gate)
Best time: July–August for lotus blooms
Xianshuigu, meaning "Salty Water Wharf," is the historic administrative and commercial center of Jinnan District, with roots dating back over 1,000 years to the Tang Dynasty. The name reflects the area's unique geography — where the fresh waters of the Haihe River met the tidal salt waters from the Bohai Sea, creating brackish conditions that shaped the local economy and culture for centuries. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xianshuigu developed into a thriving market town serving the agricultural communities of southern Tianjin, with a bustling weekly market that continues to this day. The town center has the vibe of a traditional Chinese county seat: a mix of older commercial streets (some dating from the Republican era) with modern developments. The main commercial street (Xianshuigu Main Street, 咸水沽大街) is lined with shops selling everything from farm equipment to mobile phones — it's a fascinating place to observe daily life. The Xianshuigu Morning Market (咸水沽早市, 6:00–10:00am daily, best on weekends) is a must-visit for food enthusiasts: vendors sell fresh local produce (including the famous Xiaozhan rice, ¥5–8/kg), live poultry and fish, local tofu products, and prepared foods. The market is located in a covered pavilion behind Main Street. The area is also the transportation hub of Jinnan — Xianshuigu Station (咸水沽站) on Metro Line 1's extension (Jinnan branch) provides fast connections to central Tianjin in about 30 minutes. The town has several budget hotels (¥100–200/night) and restaurants serving local Jinnan cuisine. The most famous local dish is "Xianshuigu Tianjin-style noodles" — ask at any local noodle shop (¥12–15). Xianshuigu doesn't have major tourist attractions per se, but the experience of exploring an authentic Chinese district town — the market, the streets, the food — is itself a rewarding cultural experience. Allow 1–2 hours for the market and main streets.
Hours: Market 6:00–10:00am; town 24 hours
Admission: Free
Recommended Duration: 1–2 hours (morning market)
