Hedong District 河东区 — Haihe River Gateway — Tianjin's Riverside District
Hedong (河东区) means "East of the River" — it lies on the eastern bank of the Haihe River in central Tianjin. Covering 39 km² with a population of about 1 million, it is a residential and commercial district with deep working-class roots. Hedong is known as the "gateway to Tianjin" because Tianjin Railway Station sits right at its western border along the river. The riverside promenade offers excellent views of historic bridges including Jiefang Bridge and Binhai Bridge. Several old industrial sites are being transformed into creative districts, making Hedong an interesting blend of authentic local life and urban renewal.
The iconic Tianjin Railway Station (built 1888, rebuilt 2007) sits right on the Haihe River at Hedong's western edge. The station square and adjacent riverside promenade offer some of the best views of the Haihe's historic bridges, especially Jiefang Bridge (解放桥) and Binhai Bridge (滨海桥). At night the bridges are beautifully illuminated, making this a favorite local evening stroll spot. The station is also a major high-speed rail hub with frequent G trains to Beijing South (30 minutes, ¥54.5).

The main departure pier for Haihe river cruises is located at Tianjin Station in Hedong. These 50-minute scenic cruises glide through the heart of Tianjin, passing under historic bridges and showcasing the city's unique riverside architecture from the water. The night cruise is especially popular for the evening light show when the bridges and riverside buildings are spectacularly lit. Cruises run frequently throughout the day.

Located at 38 Daqiao Dao, this active Buddhist temple was built in 1995 following ancient traditions. The temple's centerpiece is a magnificent 7-meter white jade Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) statue imported from Myanmar. The grounds also feature a large incense burner, bell tower, drum tower, and meditation halls. The temple gardens are beautifully landscaped with ancient ginkgo trees, making it popular with local worshippers and visitors seeking a peaceful retreat.

Situated at 41 Dazhigu Qianjie, this museum is built on the site of the Tianfei Palace (Goddess of the Sea Temple) dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (13th century). The exhibits explore Tianjin's history as a major river port, maritime trade along the Grand Canal, and the Mazu (Tianfei) worship tradition. Artifacts include pottery recovered from sunken ships, ancient navigation tools, and original Yuan Dynasty roof tiles. A fascinating glimpse into Tianjin's maritime past.

At 2 Haihe Dongdao, this creative arts district occupies a repurposed old textile factory — the Tianjin No. 3 Cotton Mill, originally built in 1921. The industrial architecture is striking: red brick walls, steel frames, and distinctive sawtooth roofs create a unique atmosphere. Today it houses art galleries, design studios, craft workshops, specialty coffee shops, and boutique restaurants. Regular art exhibitions and weekend markets make this a dynamic cultural destination. Different vendors and shops open on weekends.

Located on Shiyijing Lu between Bayi Qi Lu and Hongqi Lu, this 600-meter pedestrian street is dedicated entirely to music. Lined with shops selling all kinds of musical instruments — from traditional Chinese instruments (erhu, pipa, guzheng) to pianos, guitars, and violins — it has become the go-to destination for musicians across north China since its founding in 2010. Even if you're not shopping, it's fascinating to browse and hear impromptu performances.

Located at 68 Jinbin Da Dao, this large modern shopping complex features over 200 stores, an indoor ice rink, IMAX cinema, a food court with dozens of restaurants, and a supermarket. It is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike — perfect for a break from sightseeing or as a rainy day activity. The ice rink and cinema are particularly popular with families.

This 7-hectare public park at 141 Jinbin Da Dao features a large lake, weeping willow trees, winding walking paths, and colorful flower gardens. Popular with locals for morning tai chi sessions, evening group dancing (广场舞), and family picnics on weekends. The park also has a small children's playground and outdoor exercise equipment. A great place to observe authentic local leisure life.

Built in 1958 during the Great Leap Forward, this is one of Tianjin's oldest workers' parks, located at 3 Guangming Lu. The park features a sports stadium, a small amusement park for children, and boat rentals on the lake. It retains a charming old-fashioned feel — you'll see locals playing cards, singing traditional opera, and flying kites. Weekend mornings are especially lively with opera singers and dancers. A wonderful window into authentic Tianjin working-class culture.

Opened in 2015 at 1 Fumin Lu, this modern park is built along the Haihe River and is designed for active recreation. Facilities include basketball courts, tennis courts, a skate park, and a 2-kilometer riverside jogging path. Modern fitness equipment is distributed throughout the park. Great for active travelers who want to keep up their fitness routine while exploring Tianjin. The riverside location offers pleasant views while you work out.

Money saving tips: Eat along Daqiao Dao for authentic, cheap local food. Use the metro day pass (¥10–15). Hedong's attractions are mostly free or very low-cost. Skip the tourist-heavy Heping District for meals.
Spring (March–May): Cherry blossoms at Hedong Park, mild 12–25°C, perfect for Haihe riverside walks. Best time for outdoor photography along the river promenade.
Summer (June–August): Hot 26–35°C and humid. Best to visit attractions in the morning or evening. Evening Haihe River cruises are magical with the bridge lights. Cotton 3's indoor art spaces provide a cool refuge during the hottest hours.
Autumn (September–October): Best season. 15–25°C, crisp air, golden light on the Haihe River. Ideal for outdoor exploration. Moon Festival pastries at Daqiao Dao in September are a seasonal treat.
Winter (November–February): Cold 0–8°C, but far fewer tourists. Indoor attractions shine: Jianfu Guanyin Temple, Tianfei Palace Museum, and Cotton 3 creative spaces. Hot baozi and hearty noodle soups will warm you up.
