Hengyang (衡阳市)

Nanyue Mountain · Mount Heng · Grand Temple · Zhurong Peak · Shigu Academy

Hengyang (衡阳) is home to Mount Heng (衡山), also known as Nanyue (南岳) — the "Southern Mountain" and one of China's Five Great Mountains (五岳). For over 2,000 years, this sacred peak has drawn pilgrims, poets, and emperors to its slopes. At the mountain's base lies the magnificent Nanyue Grand Temple, the largest ancient temple complex in China.

Located in central Hunan Province where the Xiang, Zheng, and Lei Rivers converge, Hengyang has been a cultural and transportation hub since ancient times. The city is nicknamed "Fire City" (火城) — not just for its famously hot summers, but for its deep association with the Fire God Zhurong, who is honored at Zhurong Peak, the highest summit of Mount Heng.

Beyond the mountain, Hengyang offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions: the thousand-year-old Shigu Academy (one of China's four great ancient academies), Huiyan Pagoda with its poetic legends, and the charming Nanyue Old Town where pilgrims have lodged for centuries. The city's location on the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed rail corridor makes it an easy stop for travelers exploring central China.

Nanyue Mountain (Mount Heng)

南岳衡山 Nányuè Héngshān

One of China's Five Great Mountains (五岳) — the sacred mountains that have defined Chinese cosmology for millennia. Mount Heng (Nanyue, meaning "Southern Mountain") is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a national 5A tourist attraction, spanning 72 peaks across an area of about 100 km². The highest peak, Zhurong Peak, rises to 1,290 meters above sea level.

Mount Heng has been venerated since the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC). It's unique among China's sacred mountains for its dual Buddhist and Taoist heritage — temples and shrines of both religions coexist peacefully on the same mountain. Over centuries, emperors made pilgrimages here to offer sacrifices to the Fire God Zhurong and pray for good fortune.

The mountain offers excellent hiking opportunities. The main hiking trail from Nanyue Town to the summit passes through forests of ancient pines, past cascading waterfalls, and alongside centuries-old stone inscriptions. You can also take a shuttle bus (¥45 one-way) to the mid-mountain area and then the cable car (¥80 round-trip) to near the summit. A full round trip with hiking requires about 6-8 hours; with shuttle + cable car, about 4-5 hours.

Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) for blooming azaleas and mild weather; Autumn (September-November) for crisp air and stunning foliage colors. Summer can be very hot (hence the nickname "Fire City"), while winter occasionally offers snowy mountain views. The annual Nanyue Temple Fair (August-September) showcases traditional music, dance, and pilgrimage rituals.

Nanyue Grand Temple

南岳大庙 Nányuè Dàmiào

The largest ancient temple complex in China, covering an area of 98,500 square meters at the foot of Mount Heng. First built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) and expanded through the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, this magnificent complex is a rare example of Buddhist and Taoist worship coexisting under one roof — the east side is Taoist, the west side is Buddhist, and the central axis is dedicated to the Fire God Zhurong.

The temple features nine grand halls along its north-south axis, each with its own distinct architectural style. The main hall, the Palace of the Saint Emperor of Nanyue, houses a massive gilded statue of the Fire God and is supported by 72 stone pillars (symbolizing the 72 peaks of Mount Heng). The roof is adorned with golden glazed tiles and intricate carvings depicting mythological scenes.

Watch for the "Nine Dragons" stone carving — a masterpiece of Qing Dynasty craftsmanship, and the massive bronze incense burner in the main courtyard, always surrounded by devotees offering prayers. The temple comes alive during the Temple Fair in the eighth lunar month, with traditional dragon dances, opera performances, and thousands of pilgrims making offerings.

Photography tip: The temple is most photogenic in early morning (before 9 AM) when the first sunlight hits the golden roofs and the crowds are thin. During the annual plum blossom season (February-March), the temple gardens are particularly beautiful.

Zhurong Peak (Fire God Peak)

祝融峰 Zhùróng Fēng

At 1,290 meters, Zhurong Peak is the highest of Mount Heng's 72 peaks and the mountain's spiritual heart. Named after Zhurong, the Fire God of Chinese mythology who is said to have once lived here, the peak offers breathtaking panoramic views — on clear days you can see for hundreds of kilometers across the plains of central Hunan.

At the summit stands Zhurong Temple, a small but atmospheric shrine where pilgrims burn incense and pray. This is one of the oldest sacred sites on the mountain — emperors came here for centuries to offer sacrifices. The temple's simple stone architecture blends beautifully with the rocky summit landscape.

Sunrise at Zhurong Peak is a legendary experience. Many visitors stay overnight in Nanyue Town and begin hiking around 3-4 AM to reach the summit by dawn. The sunrise here — with layers of mountains emerging from a sea of clouds — is one of central China's most spectacular natural sights.

Access: From the mid-mountain parking lot, it's about a 40-minute hike to the summit. Alternatively, you can take the cable car to near the peak and walk the final 15 minutes.

Nanyue Old Town

南岳古镇 Nányuè Gǔzhèn

A charming historic town at the base of Mount Heng, Nanyue Old Town has been the gateway for mountain pilgrims for over a thousand years. The town's main street is lined with traditional stone buildings housing tea houses, souvenir shops, and vegetarian restaurants catering to pilgrims.

The atmosphere here is unique — a blend of religious devotion and mountain hospitality. You'll see pilgrims in traditional dress, monks in saffron robes, and travelers from all over China. The old town is particularly atmospheric in the evening, when lanterns are lit and the smell of incense drifts through the streets.

Stationery note: Nanyue Old Town is about 40 minutes by bus from Hengyang city center. Many visitors choose to stay overnight in the town to catch the sunrise at Zhurong Peak. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses (¥100-200/night) to comfortable hotels (¥300-500/night).

Shigu Academy (Stone Drum Academy)

石鼓书院 Shígǔ Shūyuàn

Founded in 996 AD during the Song Dynasty, Shigu Academy is one of China's four great ancient academies (四大书院) and the oldest continuously operating school in Hunan Province. Located on a rocky promontory where the Xiang, Zheng, and Lei Rivers converge, the academy's name means "Stone Drum" — inspired by a large drum-shaped rock at the riverside.

The academy played a crucial role in the development of Neo-Confucianism, China's dominant philosophical system for over 800 years. Great scholars including Zhu Xi (朱熹) — the founder of Neo-Confucianism — and Wang Yangming (王阳明) lectured here. The academy buildings have been restored and now house a museum showcasing the history of Chinese education, with exhibits of ancient books, calligraphy, and scholarly artifacts.

The setting is spectacular: the academy sits at the confluence of three rivers, with Mount Heng visible in the distance. The garden features traditional Chinese landscaping with bamboo groves, lotus ponds, and covered walkways. It's a peaceful escape from the city and offers insights into China's scholarly traditions.

Huiyan Pagoda (Returning Goose Peak)

回雁峰 Huíyàn Fēng

Legend says that wild geese migrating south each year fly no further than this hill — they "return" (回) here, believing they've reached the edge of the world. Hence the name "Huiyan" (Returning Geese). This poetic legend has inspired countless Chinese poems and songs over the centuries.

Today, Huiyan Pagoda sits in a beautiful city park in central Hengyang. The seven-story pagoda was rebuilt in the 1980s in classic Ming Dynasty style, and you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and the Xiang River. The surrounding park features gardens, pavilions, and a small museum about local history and culture.

The park is especially popular in the early morning when locals practice tai chi, play traditional musical instruments, and walk their birds. It's a great place to experience everyday Chinese life. The best time to photograph the pagoda is at sunset, when golden light illuminates its layered roofs.

Caoxi Forest & Xueda Cavern

曹溪森林 Xuédà Dòng

About 20 minutes from the mountain scenic area, Caoxi Forest is a hidden gem with walking trails through bamboo groves, a beautiful waterfall, and the fascinating Xueda Cavern — a karst cave system stretching nearly a kilometer underground. The cave features stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground stream that you can hear flowing beneath your feet.

The forest area is considerably less crowded than the main mountain trail, offering a quiet alternative for nature lovers. It's particularly lovely in late spring when wildflowers bloom along the trails. Best for: travelers who have extra time after exploring the main mountain and want to escape the crowds.

🕐 Hours: 8:00–17:00 🎫 Admission: ¥50 (Caoxi + cave) ⏱ Suggested: 2-3 hours
