Baodingshan Rock Carvings (宝顶山石刻)

Baodingshan — UNESCO World Heritage, 10,000+ Buddhist Statues, the "Thousand-Hand Guanyin"

Baodingshan Rock Carvings (宝顶山石刻, Bǎodǐng Shān Shíkè) is the crown jewel of Dazu District and the primary reason travelers visit this area. Located on Baoding Mountain (宝顶山, 550 meters elevation) 15km northeast of Dazu city center, this massive cliff-side carving complex was created between 1174 and 1252 CE during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279) under the direction of the Buddhist monk Zhao Zhifeng (赵智凤, 1159–1249), who spent 70+ years overseeing the project. The site features over 10,000 Buddhist statues carved into 41 rock niches along a 500-meter cliff face, representing the most complete and well-preserved set of Esoteric Buddhist carvings in China. The most famous statue is the "Thousand-Hand Guanyin" (千手观音, Qiānshǒu Guānyīn) — a 7.7-meter-tall, 45-meter-wide cliff carving featuring 1,007 hands (each with an eye on the palm), carved in high relief with extraordinary detail — each hand holds a different Buddhist implement (lotus, scroll, pagoda, bell, etc.). The statue was meticulously restored between 2008–2015 at a cost of ¥120 million, using traditional techniques and 1,200+ grams of gold leaf. Other highlights include: the "Six Paths of Rebirth" (六道轮回, Liùdào Lúnhuí, a 4.7-meter-diameter Wheel of Life carving with 6 scenes of Buddhist rebirth); the "Nirvana of Sakyamuni" (释迦涅槃, Shìjiā Nièpán, a 31-meter-long recumbent Buddha sculpture, the largest in Dazu); the "Instructing Filial Piety" (父母恩重, Fùmǔ Ēnzhòng, 11 panels depicting the 11 stages of raising a child, from pregnancy to old age — a unique blend of Buddhist and Confucian values); and the "Hell Scroll" (地狱变相, Dìyù Biànxiàng, 18 vivid scenes of Buddhist hell punishments, including "scraping tongue" and "crushing in a mortar"). The site also has a "Digital Exhibition Hall" (数字展示中心, ¥15 extra, 20-minute 4K film about the carvings' history, available in English with headphones). Entry: ¥90 (March–November), ¥70 (December–February); students ¥45/¥35. The site is a 25-minute taxi ride (¥25–35) from Dazu city center. Open 8:30am–6:00pm (March–October), 8:30am–5:30pm (November–February). Allow 2.5–4 hours for the full cliff walk and digital hall.

Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻)

Beishan — 10,000+ Tang & Song Dynasty Statues, 290 Rock Niches, the "Gem of Tang Sculpture"

Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻, Běishān Shíkè) is the second most important carving site in Dazu, located on the northern slope of Longgang Mountain (龙岗山, 565 meters) just 2km north of Dazu city center. Carving began in 892 CE during the late Tang Dynasty (618–907) under the local military governor Wei Junjing (韦君靖, who built a fort on the mountain) and continued through the Song Dynasty (960–1279) for over 250 years — making it the oldest and longest-carved site in Dazu. The site features over 10,000 statues in 290 rock niches spread along a 1.5km cliff face. The most famous section is the "Grotto of the Song Dynasty" (宋代石窟, Sòngdài Shíkū) — 12 niches carved between 1000–1100 CE, featuring the most elegant and refined Buddhist sculptures of the period. Highlights include: the "Sakyamuni Triad" (释迦三尊, Shìjiā Sānzūn, a 3.5-meter-tall central Buddha flanked by 2 bodhisattvas, carved 1020 CE, considered the finest Tang-Song transition style in China); the "Thousand-Buddha Niche" (千佛龛, Qiānfó Lóng, with 1,200+ small Buddha figures carved in 12 horizontal rows, each 15–20cm tall, all with different facial expressions); the "Guan yin of the Southern Sea" (南海观音, Nánhǎi Guānyīn, a 4.2-meter-tall standing Guanyin, carved 1100 CE, with an unusually slender, graceful posture); and the "Vairocana Niche" (毗卢遮那佛龛, Pílúzhēnà Fólóng, a 5.5-meter-tall cosmic Buddha surrounded by 1,000 small attendants, carved 1050 CE). Nanshan Rock Carvings (南山石刻, Nánshān Shíkè) is the only major Taoist (道教, Dàojiào) carving site in Dazu, located on the southern slope of Nanshan Mountain (南山, 430 meters) 3km south of Dazu city center. Carving began in 1130 CE during the Southern Song Dynasty and continued for 80+ years, resulting in 500+ Taoist statues in 15 rock niches — a rare surviving example of Song Dynasty Taoist sculpture in China (most Taoist temples were destroyed during later dynasties). The most famous statue is the "Longevity Star" (寿星, Shòuxīng, also called "Old Man of the South Pole"), a 3.8-meter-tall standing figure with a prominent forehead, a peach in his left hand, and a deer by his side — the Taoist god of longevity, carved with extraordinary warmth and humor (his smile is said to be the most joyful in all Dazu carvings). Other highlights include: the "Jade Emperor Niche" (玉皇大帝龛, Yùhuáng Dàdì Lóng, a 4.5-meter-tall central Taoist deity surrounded by 8 immortals, carved 1150 CE); the "Three Pure Ones" (三清, Sānqīng, a triad of the highest Taoist deities, each 3.2 meters tall, carved with swirling cloud patterns); and the "Taoist Ritual Scene" (道场图, Dàochǎng Tú, a 2.8×4.5-meter panel showing a complete Taoist ceremony with 30+ figures, musicians, and dancers). Shimenshan Rock Carvings (石门山石刻, Shímén Shān Shíkè) is a unique site where Buddhist and Taoist carvings coexist harmoniously, located on Shimen Mountain (石门山, 580 meters) 20km east of Dazu city center. Carving took place between 1094–1154 CE (Southern Song Dynasty) in 12 rock niches, featuring 300+ statues that blend Buddhist compassion with Taoist immortality追求. The site's most famous statue is the "Water-Moon Guanyin" (水月观音, Shuǐyuè Guānyīn) — a 2.8-meter-tall seated Guanyin leaning against a rocky outcrop, with one leg bent and the other hanging down, gazing at her reflection in a "moon pond" (actually a natural rock pool) — considered the most graceful and relaxed posture in all Dazu carvings. Other highlights include: the "Buddha Preaching" (说法佛, Shuōfǎ Fó, a 3.5-meter-tall seated Buddha surrounded by 12 disciples, each with distinct facial expressions); the "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" (八仙过海, Bāxiān Guòhǎi, a 3×2-meter panel showing the 8 Taoist immortals on their respective animals); and the "Taoist Thunder God" (雷公, Léigōng, a fierce guardian figure with wings and thunderbolts, 2.2 meters tall). 🌤️ Seasonal Highlights

🌸 Spring (March–May) — BEST season: ideal weather & the Stone Carving Festival: Spring is the absolute best time to visit Dazu. The weather (14–26°C) is perfect for walking the 500-meter cliff face at Baodingshan (no shade, so summer is uncomfortably hot). The "Dazu Stone Carving Festival" (大足石刻文化节) is held every April 18–20, with carving demonstrations, Buddhist chanting ceremonies, and a night market — the most vibrant time of year. The hills around Dazu burst into bloom with wild azaleas (杜鹃花, April) and rapeseed flowers (油菜花, March). The Baodingshan cliffs are less crowded than in summer. Spring is also the best season for photography — clear skies and soft light.

☀️ Summer (June–August) — HOT but cultural workshops & lake activities: Summer is HOT (32–36°C) in Dazu, but this is when the "Stone Carving Workshops" (石刻作坊) on West Street are most active — master carvers work longer hours (7:00am–8:00pm) and offer hands-on workshops (¥30–50, you carve a small Buddha). Longshui Lake is popular for boating and kayaking (water 25–28°C). The Baodingshan cliffs have little shade — visit before 10:00am or after 4:00pm. The "Confucius Birthday Ceremony" (孔子诞辰, September 28) is just outside summer but worth planning for. Summer evenings at the night market (18:00–23:00) are lively and relatively cool.

🍂 Autumn (September–November) — Second best season: clear skies & cultural ceremonies: Autumn (12–24°C) is excellent. The "Confucius Birthday Ceremony" (孔子诞辰, September 28) features traditional music and dance at the Confucian Temple — a uniquely cultural experience. The weather is perfect for the 1.5km cliff walk at Beishan and the 500-meter walk at Baodingshan. The hills around Dazu turn golden with ginkgo trees (银杏, November) — especially beautiful at the Confucian Temple's Scholar's Garden. Autumn is also the harvest season for Dazu's tofu soybeans — the tofu pudding is at its freshest and creamiest.

❄️ Winter (December–February) — Cool, quiet & budget-friendly: Winter (5–12°C) is the quietest season — Baodingshan and Beishan can feel almost private (you might have a niche to yourself for 5–10 minutes). The carvings are dramatic in winter light (low sun angle creates deep shadows that highlight the carvings' 3D relief). The "Thousand-Hand Guanyin" is especially photogenic in winter's clear, dry air. Winter is also the cheapest season (Baodingshan ¥70 vs ¥90 in peak season). The Dazu tofu pudding is served hot (¥8–10) — the ultimate comfort food after a chilly morning at the cliffs. Bring a warm jacket (the cliffs are exposed to wind).

💡 Practical Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: Spring (March–May) for the Stone Carving Festival and perfect weather. Autumn (September–November) for the Confucius Ceremony and ginkgo season. Winter for fewer crowds and lower prices.
  • Recommended 1-day itinerary (from Chongqing): Take 7:00am CRH from Chongqing West → arrive Dazu South 8:00am → bus #204 to Dazu city (8:30am) → taxi to Baodingshan (9:00am) → Baodingshan cliffs (2.5 hours) + Digital Hall (30 min) + Museum (1.5 hours) → lunch at Baodingshan Restaurant (1:00–2:00pm) → taxi to Beishan (2:30pm) → Beishan cliffs (1.5 hours) → return to Dazu city (4:30pm) → West Street teahouse (5:00–6:00pm) → CRH back to Chongqing (7:00pm). Covers Dazu's essentials in one long day.
  • Baodingshan cliff walking strategy: The 500-meter cliff face is a ONE-WAY walk (start at the north end, finish at the south end). The most famous statues (Thousand-Hand Guanyin, Nirvana Buddha) are at the SOUTH end — save your energy for the end. Bring ¥10–20 small bills for the digital hall headphones (deposit, refundable). The cliff has 300+ stone steps total — moderate fitness required. Wear comfortable walking shoes (the path is uneven stone).
  • Photography rules: Photography is ALLOWED at all Dazu carving sites (unlike some Buddhist sites in China). However, TRIPODS are prohibited at Baodingshan (you can apply for a permit at the ticket office for ¥100/day, requires 1-day advance notice). The best natural light for the Thousand-Hand Guanyin is 10:00–11:30am (sunlight hits the gold leaf directly). For the Nirvana Buddha, afternoon light (2:00–4:00pm) is better. Bring a wide-angle lens (16–24mm) for the cliff niches.
  • English signage & guides: Baodingshan has English-language signage at the main 10 niches (60% of the site). The Digital Exhibition Hall has English headphones (free with deposit). For a deeper understanding, hire an English-speaking guide at the Baodingshan ticket office (¥200 for 2.5 hours, book 1 day in advance via your hotel or WeChat). The guide will explain the Buddhist stories behind each carving — essential for appreciating the site's cultural depth.
  • Payment methods: WeChat Pay and Alipay are widely accepted in Dazu city and at Baodingshan. Carry ¥100–200 cash for the smallest West Street workshops (many are cash-only). The CRH tickets can be purchased with WeChat/Alipay at the station.
