Jinyun Mountain National Nature Reserve (缙云山国家级自然保护区)
Jinyun Mountain — 1,764m Peak, 1,700+ Plant Species, Chongqing's Green Lung
Jinyun Mountain (缙云山, Jìnyún Shān, 1,764 meters above sea level) is the highest peak in Chongqing's central region and the crown jewel of Beibei District, designated as a National Nature Reserve in 1982. The mountain covers 7,600 hectares of protected forest with 1,700+ documented plant species (including 50+ rare and endangered species like the dove tree / 珙桐, "living fossil" of the plant world) and 170+ bird species. The mountain has been a sacred Taoist site for over 1,500 years — the "Jinyun Temple" (缙云寺, built 423 CE during the Liu Song Dynasty) at 1,050 meters elevation is one of the oldest Taoist temples in Southwest China, featuring a 16-meter-tall copper hall (铜殿, cast 1605, weighing 2.5 tons) and a 9-story octagonal pagoda (八角塔, built 1780). The mountain's main hiking trail (7.5km one-way, 3–4 hours to the summit) starts from the temple and passes through: the "Fir Tree Valley" (冷杉谷, 2km of 300-year-old fir trees), the "Cloud Sea Viewing Platform" (云海观景台, 1,550m, best at sunrise 5:30–6:30am after rainy nights), and the "Summit Stele" (山顶碑, a 3-meter stone monument marking the 1,764m peak with 360° views of Chongqing's urban sprawl (visible on clear days). The mountain also has a cable car (索道, ¥30 one-way, 15 minutes from base to near the temple). Entry to the mountain is ¥40 (students ¥20). The best time to visit is spring (April–May) for azaleas (3,000+ rhododendron bushes in bloom) or autumn (October–November) for red maple leaves. The mountain is a 40-minute taxi ride (¥50–65) from Beibei Station, or take bus #518 (50 minutes, ¥6). Open 7:00am–6:00pm (summer), 7:30am–5:30pm (winter). Allow 5–7 hours for a full summit hike or 3–4 hours with cable car.
Beibei Hot Springs (北碚温泉)
Beibei Hot Springs — 1,600+ Years of History, 35°C–52°C Natural Thermal Waters
Beibei Hot Springs (北碚温泉, Běibèi Wēnquán) is one of China's oldest documented hot spring sites, with a history dating back to 420 CE (Liu Song Dynasty), when the area was known as "Warm Spring Valley" (温汤谷). The springs are fed by 7 natural geothermal sources at the foot of Jinyun Mountain, with water temperatures ranging from 35°C to 52°C and rich mineral content (sulfur, calcium, magnesium, metaboric acid) that locals believe have therapeutic properties for skin conditions, arthritis, and fatigue. The main spring area (opened as a public bathhouse in 1927 by the famed Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi / 陶行知) has been continuously operating for nearly 100 years. Today, there are 3 main hot spring facilities: the "Beibei Jinyun Hot Spring Resort" (缙云山温泉度假村, ¥128–198/person for 4-hour sessions, 28 indoor/outdoor pools including a infinity pool overlooking the mountain, open 10:00am–midnight), the "Public Hot Spring Pool" (大众温泉池, ¥35/person, a no-frills 50-meter outdoor pool with 42°C water, open 7:00am–10:00pm, popular with locals), and the "Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hot Spring" (行知温泉, ¥88/person, 12 smaller pools in a garden setting, named after the educator who promoted the springs' health benefits). The hot spring area also has a "Spring Water Tea House" (温泉茶室, ¥15–25/pot) serving local green tea brewed with the 38°C spring water (said to have a sweeter taste). The hot springs are a 15-minute taxi ride (¥15–20) from Beibei Station. Open daily (hours vary by facility). The best time to visit is winter (December–February) when the outdoor pools are magical in the cool mountain air (5–12°C), or after hiking Jinyun Mountain (the perfect muscle-relaxing reward). Allow 2–4 hours for a proper soak.
Jindaoxia Gorge (金刀峡)
Jindaoxia — 10km Karst Gorge with Suspension Bridges, Waterfalls & Narrowest 3m Width
Jindaoxia Gorge (金刀峡, "Golden Knife Gorge", named after a legendary golden knife-shaped rock formation in the canyon) is a spectacular 10-kilometer-long karst gorge in northern Beibei District, carved over millions of years by the Jialing River's tributary. The gorge was opened to tourists in 1998 and has since become one of Chongqing's most dramatic natural attractions. The main trail (8km one-way, 3–4 hours) follows the canyon floor, with 15 suspension bridges (the longest is 68 meters), 12 waterfalls (the tallest, "Dragon Waterfall" / 龙瀑, drops 45 meters), and narrow passages as tight as 3 meters wide (the "One-Line-Sky" / 一线天 section). The gorge's most famous feature is the "Golden Knife Rock" (金刀岩, a 28-meter-tall, 2-meter-wide limestone pillar that resembles a giant knife blade, best viewed from the 3rd suspension bridge). The trail also passes: the "Bat Cave" (蝙蝠洞, a 120-meter-deep cave with thousands of bats (best seen at dusk 6:00–7:00pm in summer), free, bring a flashlight), the "Crystal Pools" (水晶潭, 3 natural pools with emerald-green water so clear you can see 8 meters down), and the "Ancient Plank Road" (古栈道, a 300-meter section of the trail built on wooden planks attached to the cliff face, 15 meters above the river). The gorge has a "Gorge Entrance Restaurant" (峡谷入口餐厅, ¥20–35/person, open 11:00am–8:00pm) serving "Gorge Fish" (峡谷鱼, fresh river fish ¥45–60/plate) and "Bamboo Shoots" (竹笋, ¥18). Entry is ¥60 (students ¥30). The gorge is a 50-minute taxi ride (¥60–75) from Beibei Station, or take bus #520 (70 minutes, ¥8). Open 8:00am–5:00pm (last entry 3:30pm). The best time to visit is spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) when water levels are ideal and temperatures are comfortable (18–25°C). Avoid the rainy season (June–August) when the trail can be slippery and water levels dangerous. Allow 4–6 hours for the full gorge trail.
Pianyan Ancient Town (偏岩古镇)
Pianyan — 300-Year-Old "Leaning Rock" Town, Black Salt Stone Bridge & Shiqiao River
Pianyan Ancient Town (偏岩古镇, "Leaning Rock Ancient Town", named after a massive 15-meter-tall boulder that leans 35° over the Shiqiao River / 石桥河) is a beautifully preserved 300-year-old town in northern Beibei District, first established during the Ming Dynasty (around 1640 CE) as a grain shipping port. The town's main street (偏岩正街, 800 meters long) is paved with flagstones and lined with 60+ traditional Bayu-style buildings (gray tile roofs, wooden lattice windows, stone walls) that date to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). The town's most iconic structure is the "Black Salt Stone Bridge" (黑盐石桥, built 1780, 45 meters long, 6 meters wide, made of black limestone blocks — the town's original lifeline for transporting salt from the nearby salt wells). The bridge is still in daily use by locals and is a favorite photo spot. The Shiqiao River flowing through the town is shallow and clear (0.5–1.5 meters deep in most sections), and in summer (June–August), the river becomes a natural water park — locals and visitors alike bring inflatable rafts, water guns, and picnic mats to the riverbank (free, no facilities, bring your own gear). The town has 15+ teahouses along the river, the most famous being "Pianyan Old Teahouse" (偏岩老茶馆, operating since 1950, ¥10–15/pot, with wooden benches right on the riverbank). The town also has a "Tofu Street" (豆腐街) where you can watch artisans making hand-crafted tofu (¥5–8/block) and try "River Fish Tofu Soup" (河鱼豆腐汤, ¥25/bowl). Entry to the town is FREE. The town is a 40-minute taxi ride (¥45–55) from Beibei Station, or take bus #511 (50 minutes, ¥6). Open 24 hours (shops 8:00am–10:00pm). The best time to visit is a weekday morning (9:00–11:00am) when the town is quiet and the river mist lingers. Allow 2–3.5 hours for exploring the streets, bridge, and river.
Beibei Tianfu Plaza & Jialing Riverfront (北碚天府广场 & 嘉陵江滨)
Tianfu Plaza — Beibei's Bustling CBD with Jialing River Views & Night Market
Tianfu Plaza (天府广场, "Heavenly Capital Plaza") is the commercial heart of Beibei District, a 120,000㎡ pedestrian square built in 2003 adjacent to the Jialing River's northern bank. The square is named "Tianfu" (天府, "Heavenly Capital") in reference to Chongqing's historical nickname as the "Heavenly Capital of the Southwest" (西南天府). The plaza is anchored by "Beibei Wanda Plaza" (北碚万达广场, 150,000㎡, opened 2010), "New Century Department Store" (新世纪百货, a 6-floor traditional department store), and "Tianfu Movie City" (天府影城, 8-screen cinema). A unique feature of the plaza is the "Jialing River Sculpture Garden" (嘉陵江雕塑园) — a 200-meter-long riverside promenade with 12 bronze sculptures depicting scenes from Beibei's history: the 420 CE discovery of the hot springs, the 1927 opening of the first public bathhouse, the 1982 designation of Jinyun Mountain as a nature reserve, and the 1998 opening of Jindaoxia Gorge. The promenade also has a "River Viewing Terrace" (观江台, free, open 24h) with panoramic views of the Jialing River and the opposite bank's green hills — a popular spot for evening strolls (best at sunset 6:00–7:30pm). The plaza's "Night Market" (天府夜市, open 5:00pm–1:00am) has 60+ food stalls serving local specialties: "Beibei Small Noodles" (北碚小面, ¥8), "Grilled River Shrimp" (烤河虾, ¥18), and "Jinyun Mountain Herbal Tea" (缙云山凉茶, ¥6/cup). The plaza is a 5-minute walk from Beibei Station (Metro Line 6, Exit A). Free, open 24 hours. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for shopping and dining.

Beibei Old Street & British Consulate Ruins (北碚老街 & 英国领事馆旧址)
Beibei Old Street — 1920s Foreign Concession, British Consulate Ruins & Qiaomu Culture
Beibei Old Street (北碚老街, also called "Warm Spring Old Street" / 温汤老街) is a 600-meter-long historic street in central Beibei, preserving the area's unique 1920s–1940s foreign concession-era architecture. In 1923, the British government established a consular post in Beibei (the "British Consulate in Beibei" / 英国驻北碚领事馆, 1923–1949) to oversee trade and protect British settlers in the hot spring area — making Beibei one of the few inland Chinese towns with a formal foreign concession. The consulate building (built 1923, restored 2008) is a 2-story red-brick structure with arched windows, a tiled roof, and a small garden — now a small museum (free, open 9:00am–5:00pm, closed Mondays) displaying photos and artifacts from the concession era. The street also has 15+ well-preserved 1920s–1930s buildings in a blend of Chinese and Western styles (Chinese gray tile roofs atop Western-style brick facades): the "Tao Xingzhi Former Residence" (陶行知故居, the educator lived here 1939–1946, now a memorial hall, free), the "Qiaomu Former Residence" (乔木故居, Qiaomu (1916–1997) was a famous Chinese literary critic and translator, the house is now a small library, free), and the "Old Hot Spring Bathhouse" (老温泉浴池, built 1927, now a museum of hot spring culture, ¥10). The street's "Old Street Teahouse" (老街茶馆, ¥15/pot, open 8:00am–10:00pm) serves local tea in a restored 1930s building with original wooden furniture. The street is free to explore, a 10-minute walk from Beibei Station (Metro Line 6, Exit B). Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for the street and museums.

🌤️ Seasonal Highlights
🌸 Spring (March–May) — BEST season: azaleas, wildflowers & perfect hiking: Spring is the absolute best time to visit Beibei. Jinyun Mountain's 3,000+ rhododendron bushes (azaleas) bloom in late April–early May, creating spectacular pink and red carpets across the mountain slopes. The weather (14–25°C) is perfect for hiking the mountain or the gorge. Pianyan Ancient Town's riverside is beautiful with spring greenery. The Natural History Museum's surrounding gardens are in full bloom. Spring is also the best season for Jinyun Lake wetland (migratory birds passing through March–April).
☀️ Summer (June–August) — HOT but cooler than city: river play & hot springs at night: Summer in Beibei (32–36°C) is 3–5°C cooler than downtown Chongqing, thanks to the mountain elevation and river breezes. Pianyan's Shiqiao River becomes a natural water park (June–August, free, bring your own inflatable raft). The hot springs are magical at night (the outdoor pools under the stars in 20°C mountain air are unforgettable). Jindaoxia Gorge is lush and green but can be slippery after rains — avoid the rainy season (mid-June–July). Early morning (6:30–8:30am) hikes on Jinyun Mountain are bearable. Summer evenings (after 7pm) are best spent at the Tianfu Plaza night market.
🍂 Autumn (September–November) — Second best season: red maples & clear skies: Autumn is excellent (15–26°C). Jinyun Mountain's maple and ginkgo trees turn brilliant red and gold in late October–November — the "Red Leaf Season" (红叶季) is spectacular from the summit. Jindaoxia Gorge's water levels are ideal (not too high, not too low). The weather is crisp and clear — perfect for the 7.5km mountain hike to the summit. Pianyan Ancient Town's river views are clearest in autumn (less summer haze). November is the best month for a visit — cool, comfortable, fewer tourists.
❄️ Winter (December–February) — Hot springs season & misty gorges: Winter (5–10°C, humid) is the best season for hot springs — the contrast between the 42°C outdoor pools and the 5–10°C mountain air is magical. Jindaoxia Gorge is quieter and more mystical in winter mist. The Natural History Museum is warm and educational. Pianyan's river is low (exposing sandy beaches for picnics). The hot spring area's "Winter Solstice Festival" (冬至节, December 21–22) features special herbal bath recipes (¥198/person, includes 12-hour access). Bring a waterproof jacket — winter drizzles are frequent.
💡 Practical Travel Tips
- Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) for azaleas and ideal hiking weather. Autumn (October–November) for red leaves and clear summit views. Winter for hot springs.
- Recommended 1-day itinerary: Morning (8:00–12:00): Jinyun Mountain (¥40, 4 hours with cable car). Lunch (12:00–13:00): Herb Chicken Restaurant (¥40–65). Afternoon (13:30–17:00): Pianyan Ancient Town (free, 2.5 hours) + river stroll. Evening (17:30–19:00): Beibei Old Street (free, 1.5 hours). Evening (19:30–21:00): Tianfu Plaza night market dinner (¥15–25). Fits Beibei's essentials into one day.
- Jinyun Mountain hiking tip: The 7.5km trail to the summit is MODERATE difficulty (some steep sections, 1,000m elevation gain). Wear hiking shoes and bring 1.5L+ water. The cable car (¥30 one-way) saves 2 hours but misses the fir tree valley. Start early (7:30am) to avoid the midday heat (even in spring/autumn, the summit can be 5–8°C cooler than the base). The "Cloud Sea" (云海) is visible only on clear mornings after rainy nights — check the weather forecast.
- Hot springs etiquette: The public pool (¥35) is co-ed (bring your own swimsuit). The resort pools (¥128–198) have separate male/female sections and provide towels. Don't soak for more than 20 minutes at a time (the mineral-rich water can cause dizziness). The best time is 8:00–10:00pm when the outdoor pools are lit by soft lights and the mountain air is cool.
- Jindaoxia Gorge safety: The trail can be slippery after rains (June–August). Wear non-slip shoes. Bring a flashlight for the Bat Cave (free, but dark inside). The narrow "One-Line-Sky" section can feel claustrophobic — not recommended for those with severe claustrophobia. The last entry is 3:30pm — don't arrive late.
- Payment methods: WeChat Pay and Alipay are universal. Carry ¥100–200 cash for the smallest Pianyan teahouses (some are cash-only). The Jindaoxia entrance restaurant accepts digital payment.
