Autumn Travel in China 2026: Complete September–November Guide

Updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 17 minutes

Autumn is China's "golden season" — and for good reason. Clear skies replace summer haze, temperatures drop to comfortable levels, and the country's landscapes transform into a palette of reds, golds, and oranges. From Jiuzhaigou's kaleidoscopic lakes to the Great Wall's golden ginkgo trees, autumn offers some of the most rewarding travel experiences in China. The catch: National Day Golden Week (October 1–7) is the busiest travel period of the entire year. Plan around it or plan ahead.

1. Weather by Region & Month

Autumn is arguably the most comfortable travel season across all of China. The extreme heat of summer fades, humidity drops, and skies are often clear — especially in the north.

RegionSeptemberOctoberNovember
Beijing / North15 to 28°C6 to 21°C-3 to 12°C
Shanghai / East22 to 29°C14 to 23°C7 to 17°C
Guangzhou / South24 to 32°C19 to 28°C14 to 23°C
Chengdu / Southwest19 to 27°C13 to 21°C8 to 17°C
Kunming / Yunnan15 to 23°C10 to 20°C6 to 18°C
Xi'an / Central16 to 27°C8 to 20°C1 to 13°C
Jiuzhaigou / Sichuan6 to 21°C0 to 15°C-6 to 9°C
Lhasa / Tibet5 to 21°C-2 to 16°C-7 to 11°C
Best month: October is the sweet spot for most of China — warm days, cool nights, clear skies, and stunning fall colors. November gets cold quickly in the north. September still carries summer warmth in the south.

Air Quality

Autumn generally brings the best air quality of the year in northern China. Summer's rain clears the atmosphere, and winter's coal-heating pollution hasn't started yet. Beijing in October often has the blue skies it's famous for (天高气爽). South China stays clear year-round.

2. Top 10 Autumn Destinations

🥇 1. Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan — Peak Colors

Best time: Mid-October to early November

Jiuzhaigou in autumn is often called "the most beautiful place on earth." The park's lakes transform into every shade of turquoise, while the surrounding forests turn red, orange, and gold. This is Jiuzhaigou's absolute peak season — and the most photographed time of year.

Peak foliage dates (approximate):

Practical info: Park entry ¥169 + ¥90 bus. Daily cap: 41,000 visitors. Book on WeChat mini-program "九寨沟." Altitude 2,000–3,100m.

Getting there: Fly Chengdu → Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (1 hour). Shuttles to park (1.5 hours, ¥45).

Budget: ¥500–700/day. Hotels are expensive during peak foliage.

🥈 2. The Great Wall — Golden Ginkgo Trees

Best time: Mid-October to early November

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is surrounded by hillsides of ginkgo trees that turn brilliant gold in autumn. Walking the wall in October, with golden leaves falling and the wall snaking across forested ridges, is one of China's most iconic experiences.

Best sections for fall colors:

Mutianyu entry: ¥40. Cable car up: ¥100. Toboggan down: ¥80 (fun!).

🥉 3. Yellow Mountain (Huangshan), Anhui

Best time: Late October to November

Huangshan's autumn combines golden foliage, the sea of clouds (云海), and clear weather for photography. The combination is magical — red maples against granite peaks, shrouded in morning mist. November can be chilly but has fewer crowds.

Tips: Cable car ¥80 each way. Summit hotels ¥500–1,000. Book early — autumn is peak season. Go mid-week to avoid crowds.

4. Beijing — Imperial Autumn

Best time: October

Beijing is at its best in October. The sky is blue, the Forbidden City glows in golden autumn light, and the city's ginkgo-lined streets burst into color. Fragrant Hills (香山) is famous for red leaves, though extremely crowded — alternatives like Baiwang Mountain are less known.

Must-do:

5. Kanas Lake, Xinjiang

Best time: September (very short window)

Kanas Nature Reserve in northern Xinjiang is one of China's most remote and stunning autumn destinations. The lake changes color through the day — green, blue, and milky white — while the surrounding forests of birch and larch turn brilliant gold. The window is narrow (September only) due to early snowfall.

Getting there: Fly Urumqi → Kanas Airport (2 hours). Or overnight bus (12 hours). This is expensive and logistically challenging — budget ¥800–1,200/day.

6. Guilin & Yangshuo, Guangxi

Best time: October to November

The karst landscape around Guilin and Yangshuo is framed by golden rice paddies in autumn. Farmers harvest the rice in October, creating patchwork gold-and-green fields against the limestone peaks. The weather is dry and comfortable — no summer humidity.

Activities: Li River cruise, cycling through villages, rock climbing (Yangshuo is China's top climbing destination), bamboo rafting on Yulong River.

Budget: ¥300–500/day.

7. Lijiang & Shangri-La, Yunnan

Best time: October to November

Autumn brings clear skies to northwest Yunnan. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is visible from Lijiang on most autumn days, and the road to Shangri-La passes through golden forests. Shangri-La's Tibetan monasteries look particularly striking against blue autumn skies.

Budget: ¥350–500/day.

8. Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Best time: October to November

West Lake's willows turn gold, and the tea hills around Longjing glow with autumn colors. The Su and Bai causeways are lined with gingko and maple trees. Hangzhou's autumn food scene is also excellent — hairy crabs (大闸蟹) are in season from October.

Tip: Try hairy crab at Lou Wai Lou (楼外楼) restaurant by West Lake — it's touristy but the crab is genuinely good (¥100–150/crab).

9. Guiliu Highway, Hunan

Best time: Late October to November

The road between Guzhang and Liuyang in Hunan passes through tunnels of fiery red maple trees. This is one of China's most spectacular autumn drives, but it's relatively unknown to international tourists. Rent a car or hire a driver from Changsha.

10. Pingyao Ancient City, Shanxi

Best time: September to October

One of China's best-preserved ancient walled cities is especially atmospheric in autumn. Golden leaves fall on the Ming dynasty streets, and the surrounding countryside is harvest time. The city's traditional courtyards glow in warm autumn light.

Getting there: High-speed train from Beijing (2.5 hours, ¥200). Entry to ancient city: ¥125 (covers all sites).

3. Fall Foliage Tracker

5. Surviving National Day Golden Week

🔴 National Day (October 1–7, 2026) is the BUSIEST travel week of the year in China.

What happens: 700+ million Chinese people travel. Every tourist attraction is packed. Hotels cost 2–3x normal rates. Roads become parking lots. High-speed trains sell out within minutes of booking opening.

How to survive:
  • Option A — Avoid: The smartest choice. Plan your trip for late September or mid-October instead.
  • Option B — Go remote: Visit second-tier destinations that are less popular with domestic tourists. Examples: Pingyao, Zhangye, Dunhuang.
  • Option C — Book everything 3+ weeks ahead: Trains, hotels, attraction tickets. Book as early as possible.
  • Option D — Reverse schedule: Do indoor activities (museums, shopping) on Oct 1–3 when everyone is outdoors, then outdoor activities Oct 4–7 when crowds thin.

6. Budget Breakdown

Autumn is high season, particularly in October. Prices peak during Golden Week and foliage season at major destinations.
