Zaozhuang is located in southern Shandong Province, at the border between Shandong and Jiangsu. Originally built as an industrial city driven by coal mining, it has been transforming into a cultural tourism destination in recent years. Zaozhuang boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage: it was the site of the famous Battle of Taierzhuang, a city that produced countless heroes; it was a crucial hub on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, once bustling with merchants and boats; and it is home to the vast Weishan Lake, the largest freshwater lake wetland on the North China Plain. Today, centered on Taierzhuang Ancient City and Weishan Lake Wetland, Zaozhuang has carved out a distinctive tourism brand, becoming a popular weekend getaway destination within Shandong Province.
Taierzhuang Ancient City 台儿庄古城 is Zaozhuang's most famous tourist attraction, hailed as "China's Most Beautiful Water Town." This ancient city was almost reduced to ruins during the Battle of Taierzhuang and has been painstakingly rebuilt in recent years to recreate the water town charm along the ancient canal. Within the city, waterways crisscross and bridges are everywhere — small bridges over flowing streams, white walls with dark tiles — blending the elegance of Jiangnan water towns with the gravitas of northern ancient cities. At night, Taierzhuang Ancient City becomes a dazzling, dreamlike spectacle, earning it the nickname "the Living Ancient Canal." The Weishan Lake Wetland Red Lotus Scenic Area 微山湖湿地红荷风景区 is the largest lake wetland ecological reserve in northern China. Every summer, thousands of acres of lotus flowers bloom simultaneously — a spectacular sea of green leaves and red blossoms — making it the perfect destination for lotus viewing, birdwatching, and experiencing life on the water.
The best seasons to visit Zaozhuang are spring, summer, and autumn. In spring (March to April), Taierzhuang Ancient City comes alive with blooming flowers — willows turn green and peach blossoms appear along the ancient canal, making it perfect for leisurely strolls. Summer (June to August) is the peak lotus season at Weishan Lake; boating through vast lotus ponds with the fragrance of lotus and a gentle breeze is incredibly relaxing. In autumn (September to October), the skies are clear and crisp, and Baodugu's forests turn brilliant colors, making it the ideal time for hiking and enjoying fall foliage. Winter sees fewer tourists, and the ancient city becomes quieter and more peaceful, with discounted accommodation — great for travelers who prefer solitude. A recommended three-day itinerary: Day 1 at Taierzhuang Ancient City, Day 2 at Weishan Lake Wetland, and Day 3 at Baodugu or Xiong'er Mountain.
Taierzhuang Ancient City 台儿庄古城, located in Taierzhuang District of Zaozhuang, is a large-scale reconstructed ancient water town built on the original ruins. The city's history dates back to the Qin and Han dynasties, and it reached its zenith during the Ming and Qing dynasties thanks to shipping along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, once known as "the Number One Town Under Heaven" for its bustling commerce. In 1938, the city was nearly completely destroyed by intense Japanese bombardment during the Battle of Taierzhuang. Since 2008, the local government has invested heavily in rebuilding the city on its original site according to its historical appearance. After years of effort, a two-square-kilometer ancient city has been restored. Today, Taierzhuang Ancient City combines sightseeing, cultural experiences, and leisure entertainment, and is a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction.

Within the ancient city, eleven "Battle Ruins" have been preserved or reconstructed, including the Taierzhuang Battle Memorial Hall, the bullet-scarred wall of the Mosque, and the old railway station — authentic records of that heroic chapter of history. The memorial hall displays a wealth of precious historical photographs and artifacts, telling the moving story of how Chinese troops fought bravely to achieve the first major victory on the frontline since the War of Resistance began. Beyond the war sites, the city also features numerous historic buildings such as the Guandi Temple, Tianhou Palace, Confucius Temple, and Medicine King Temple, along with various folk museums and intangible cultural heritage exhibition halls that showcase the unique charm of canal culture.
The Weishan Lake Wetland Red Lotus Scenic Area 微山湖湿地红荷风景区 is located in Binhu Town, Tengzhou City, Zaozhuang. As the core area of the eastern Weishan Lake wetland, it covers approximately 60 square kilometers, with about 35 square kilometers of lake wetland — one of the largest and best-preserved lake wetlands in northern China. Weishan Lake is the largest freshwater lake on the North China Plain, formed by shifts in the Yellow River's course. Its vast, misty waters teem with aquatic life and birds, and it is an important part of the South Four Lakes. The scenic area is famous for its spectacular summer lotus blooms: from July to August each year, thousands of acres of lotus flowers create a breathtaking sea of green leaves and red blossoms, drawing large numbers of visitors for lotus viewing, birdwatching, and boating.

Main attractions within the scenic area include lotus-viewing boat rides, birdwatching boardwalks, water forests, and a fishing village experience zone. Taking a boat through the vast lotus ponds, you'll pass fields of swaying lotus flowers and leaves, with a refreshing fragrance and cool breeze. On the lake, you can observe egrets, herons, wild ducks, and other waterfowl up close — lucky visitors might even spot the rare Oriental White Stork and Reed Parrotbill. The birdwatching boardwalk winds through reed marshes, offering excellent vantage points for photographing waterbirds and sunsets. The water forest area features extensive dawn redwoods and bald cypresses that turn golden in autumn, their reflections creating picture-perfect scenes. The fishing village zone recreates the traditional lifestyle of Weishan Lake fishermen, where you can taste fresh lake delicacies and try your hand at casting fishing nets.
During the Lotus Festival, the scenic area can be very crowded — we recommend visiting on weekdays or arriving early in the morning. Boat tours come in two types: regular boats (fewer stops, faster) and premium painted boats (more stops, deeper experience of the wetland scenery). We recommend choosing the premium painted boat. The scenic area is about 20 km from downtown Tengzhou and 50 km from downtown Zaozhuang; driving or hiring a car is most convenient, though you can also take the scenic area shuttle bus from Tengzhou Bus Station.
Baodugu National Forest Park 抱犊崮国家森林公园 is located in Beizhuang Town, Shanting District, Zaozhuang. Its main peak, Baodugu, stands at 584 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in southern Shandong, earning it the title "the Number One Gu (Mesa) Under Heaven." Part of the Yimeng Mountain range, Baodugu is composed of Cambrian limestone that has been shaped by hundreds of millions of years of erosion into the distinctive "gu" landform — flat-topped with steep cliffs on all sides — a textbook example of "Daigu landform." The park covers approximately 6,600 hectares with a forest coverage rate exceeding 95%. Lush forests and murmuring streams create clean, cool air, making it a well-known natural oxygen bar and summer retreat in southern Shandong.

There are two ways to explore Baodugu: hiking trails or the cable car. The hiking trail is about 3 km long with roughly 2,000 steps, taking 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit, with opportunities to admire unique rock formations, ancient trees, and geological wonders along the way. The cable car takes about 20 minutes one-way and goes directly to the top — a time- and energy-saving option ideal for seniors and children. The mesa top is spacious and flat, featuring the Taoist Guding Temple dedicated to Bixia Yuanjun, which draws many worshippers. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the southern Shandong plain; on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the glimmering waters of Weishan Lake in the distance.
The park also features a 3 km cliffside walkway and a 100-meter-high glass observation deck — thrilling experiences that have become popular photo spots. There is an outdoor training base and a children's play area within the park, making it suitable for corporate team-building events and family outings. Autumn is the most beautiful season at Baodugu, when the mountains are painted in brilliant colors as red leaves contrast with dark green pines and cypresses. We recommend wearing comfortable hiking shoes and bringing plenty of drinking water. The scenic area is about a 40-minute drive from downtown Zaozhuang; driving or hiring a car is recommended.
Xiongershan Geopark in Beizhuang Town, adjacent to Baodugu. National geological park and AAAA scenic area. Main peak at 483m resembles a bear ear. Features limestone karst formations, deep canyons, and a 3km-long natural fracture zone — a rare geological wonder of northern China.

The core experience at the park is trekking through the Shuanglong Grand Rift Valley. The entrance is equipped with scenic lighting and safety railings, and visitors must wear hard hats to enter. Inside the valley, shifting light and steep rock walls create an atmosphere of adventure; some sections require climbing iron ladders and walking on elevated boardwalks. The valley maintains a year-round temperature of about 18°C, making it a pleasantly cool escape in summer. Beyond the Grand Rift Valley, the park features multiple caves including the Eighteen Arhat Cave and Guanyin Cave, filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and stone curtains in myriad shapes, beautifully illuminated by colored lighting.
Xiong'er Mountain is only 5 km from Baodugu, so both parks can be visited on the same day. We recommend exploring Baodugu in the morning (about 3 hours) and adventuring through the Xiong'er Mountain Grand Rift Valley in the afternoon (about 2 hours). A combo ticket for both parks costs approximately ¥80, which is cheaper than buying separately. Some sections of the rift are dark and narrow — visitors with larger builds or a fear of heights should exercise caution. We recommend bringing a flashlight or headlamp, wearing non-slip shoes, and watching your step. There are farm-style restaurants within the park where you can try Shanting's signature home-style dishes.
