Heze

Peony Capital · Hometown of Water Margin Heroes · Ancient Caozhou Heritage

Heze City Overview

Heze is located in southwestern Shandong Province, at the junction of Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, and Anhui provinces. Historically known as Caozhou, it is a city renowned worldwide for its peonies. Heze has a peony cultivation history spanning over a thousand years and is China's largest peony production area with the most varieties, earning it the title of "Peony Capital of China." Every year from mid to late April, millions of peonies burst into bloom in a spectacular display of color, transforming the entire city into a sea of flowers that attracts visitors from across the country. In 2012, Heze was officially designated as "China's Peony Capital" by the China Flower Association, making the peony the city's most iconic symbol and proudest cultural emblem.

Beyond peony culture, Heze is also one of China's famous birthplaces of Water Margin (Shuihu) culture. Yuncheng County is the hometown of many heroes from the classic novel "Water Margin," and legends of Liangshan heroes like Song Jiang, Chao Gai, and Wu Yong are widely celebrated here. The Water Margin Hero City attraction vividly brings this legendary history to life for visitors. Heze is also known as a hometown of Chinese opera, martial arts, and calligraphy, with rich traditional cultural heritage. Shan County's mutton soup is famous nationwide, Juye's Gongbi painting style is distinctive, and Cao County's Hanfu industry is flourishing—all adding to Heze's unique cultural appeal. Located along the former Yellow River course, Heze features fertile plains and crisscrossing rivers, with abundant natural resources including Fulong Lake Wetland, an important stopover for migratory birds.

The best time to visit Heze is undoubtedly during the Peony Festival from mid-April to early May, when peonies reach their peak bloom and over a thousand varieties create a breathtaking spectacle at Caozhou Peony Garden. If you miss the peony season, other seasons offer worthwhile experiences too. Summer is perfect for cooling off at Fulong Lake, autumn offers golden views along the former Yellow River course, and winter—though cold—has fewer tourists and cheaper accommodation, allowing you to experience the city's slow-paced lifestyle. Plan for three to four days, with at least two days dedicated to peony-related attractions during the festival. Heze has one of the lowest costs of living in Shandong, making it an excellent value destination.
