City Overview
Xinxiang is located in northern Henan Province, bordered by the Yellow River to the south and the Taihang Mountains to the north. Situated at the core of the Zhengzhou-Xinxiang metropolitan area, it is a renowned tourism city celebrated for its magnificent Taihang landscapes and deep historical heritage. The city administers four districts, five counties, and three county-level cities, covering a total area of approximately 8,291 square kilometers with a population of roughly 6.2 million. The city's name dates back to the Western Han Dynasty, derived from "New Central Township," symbolizing a fresh start under new governance. The southern foothills of the Taihang Mountains in northern Xinxiang boast some of China's most spectacular canyon landscapes. Scenic areas such as Baligou (八里沟), Wanxianshan (万仙山), and Baoquan (宝泉) are nationally famous for their dramatic peaks, deep gorges, thundering waterfalls, and dense forests, earning the title "Soul of Taihang Landscapes." The Guoliang Village (郭亮村) cliff-hanging road, carved directly into the mountainside, is a world-class engineering marvel listed among the "World's Ten Most Dangerous Roads," drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to witness its awe-inspiring presence.
Xinxiang's historical and cultural heritage is equally profound. This is the site of the legendary Battle of Muye (牧野之战), where in 1046 BCE, King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang king Zhou, establishing the Zhou Dynasty's eight-century reign — considered one of history's classic examples of victory against overwhelming odds. Xinxiang is also the birthplace of many pivotal figures in Chinese history, the most famous being Bigan (比干), a loyal minister of the late Shang Dynasty. After being executed by having his heart cut out for speaking truth to power, Bigan was posthumously honored by King Wu of Zhou as the "National Deity," becoming an enduring symbol of loyalty and righteousness in Chinese culture. Bigan Temple (比干庙) in Weihui City was built in his memory and serves as the ancestral shrine and pilgrimage site for the global Lin (林) clan. Within Huixian City, the Baiquan (百泉) Scenic Area is a renowned classical garden and spring water conservation zone in northern China, drawing scholars and poets since the Tang Dynasty. Xinxiang's folk traditions are equally vibrant — Changyuan's (长垣) culinary arts are listed as a national intangible cultural heritage, earning Changyuan the title "Hometown of Chinese Chefs."
Xinxiang's modern tourism industry has developed into a mature system centered on Taihang Mountain landscapes. The South Taihang Tourism Resort is the city's flagship brand, encompassing Baligou, Wanxianshan, Baoquan, Guanshan, Qiugou, and Qiwangzhai — totaling over 1,000 square kilometers. The Taihang range here belongs to the South Taihang system, with majestic peaks, unique geological formations, and red-rock cliffs stretching for dozens of kilometers. The highest elevation exceeds 1,600 meters, with deep gorges, numerous waterfalls, and lush vegetation combining grandeur, wonder, danger, beauty, and tranquility into what is arguably the most spectacular mountain-and-water landscape in North China. In recent years, Xinxiang has vigorously developed rural tourism and homestay economies. Many ancient villages deep in the Taihang Mountains have been transformed into distinctive boutique lodgings and art bases. Guoliang Village and Nanping Village have become nationally renowned rural tourism destinations. Xinxiang is also a notable red tourism destination, with model villages like Liuzhuang and Jinghua showcasing the achievements of socialist new countryside development.
Baligou Scenic Area (八里沟)
National 5A Scenic Area Tianhe Waterfall of TaihangBaligou (八里沟) is located in Shangbali Town, Huixian City, deep within the canyons of the Taihang Mountains' southern foothills. Named after the eight-li (about 4 km) length of its gorge, Baligou is a National 5A Tourist Attraction covering approximately 40 square kilometers, renowned for its dramatic combination of perilous cliffs, unique formations, and exquisite scenery. The red-rock cliffs of the Taihang within the scenic area are breathtaking — vertical drops exceeding 300 meters stretch for several kilometers, as if carved by a giant axe. Below these imposing cliffs lie deep canyons with babbling streams and lush vegetation, creating a striking visual contrast against the rugged stone walls. Baligou's most awe-inspiring feature is the Tianhe Waterfall (天河瀑布), with a drop of 157 meters and a width of over 10 meters — one of the largest waterfalls in northern China. During the summer rainy season, the waterfall roars with immense volume, its mist creating rainbows when sunlight shines through. In winter, the waterfall freezes into a spectacular ice cascade, translucent as jade carving — a rare ice wonderland in northern China.
The Baligou touring route is divided into Upper and Lower sections, requiring approximately 5–6 hours to complete. The Lower section focuses on water scenery, following the canyon stream upward past spots like Taohua Bay (桃花湾), Yangzhoudi (羊州地), and Mountain God Temple (山神庙). Taohua Bay, the entrance area, becomes stunningly beautiful in spring when pink peach blossoms contrast against the red cliffs, creating a picturesque Taihang spring scene. Yangzhoudi is an open area at the valley floor where the stream forms deep pools — crystal clear, with fish visible below — a perfect spot for rest and photos. The Upper section emphasizes mountain and forest scenery, requiring a climb of about 2,000 stone steps to reach the summit area. At an elevation of over 1,100 meters, the Hongshi River (红石河) scenic area is a highland plateau with sweeping views of the entire southern Taihang foothills. Named for the red gravel covering its riverbed, the Hongshi River flows with clear, sweet water year-round. The summit also features Yixiantian (一线天, "A Thread of Sky") and Heilongtan (黑龙潭) Waterfall, each with its own distinct character.
Baligou offers well-developed facilities for a comfortable visiting experience. The entrance features a large parking lot and visitor center providing guide services, luggage storage, and wheelchair rentals. Sightseeing buses and elevators are available within the park for visitors with limited stamina. Accommodation around Baligou has improved significantly, with options ranging from star-rated hotels to budget inns and farmhouse stays priced from dozens to hundreds of yuan. The Taihang Mountain boutique homestay cluster is a recent highlight — these renovated village stone houses retain traditional Taihang slate architecture while offering modern, comfortable interiors. Opening the window to views of green mountains and clear streams, they are ideal retreats from urban noise. Baligou offers distinct beauty in every season: wildflowers in spring, lush canopies in summer, fiery red foliage in autumn, and snow-covered peaks in winter. Summer escape and autumn foliage viewing are the two most popular visiting periods.
Practical Information: Baligou peak-season (March–November) admission is ¥120; off-season (December–February) is ¥60. The scenic shuttle bus is ¥40 round-trip, and the Tianhe Waterfall elevator is ¥30 one-way. Opening hours: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM. From downtown Xinxiang, take a bus to Huixian then transfer to a scenic shuttle — about 2.5 hours total. By car, take the Xinxiang-Huixian express route then the scenic area road — approximately 2 hours. Plan for a full day; wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks.
Wanxianshan Scenic Area (万仙山)
National 4A Scenic Area National GeoparkWanxianshan (万仙山) is situated deep in the Taihang Mountains of northwestern Huixian City, covering 64 square kilometers. It is both a National 4A Tourist Attraction and a National Geopark, celebrated for its cliff canyons, clear streams and emerald pools, and ancient mountain villages — a comprehensive destination blending natural scenery with cultural heritage. The area is filled with towering peaks and crisscrossing ravines, with red-rock cliffs stretching endlessly. Elevations range from 300 meters at the lowest point to 1,672 meters at the highest, creating remarkably diverse vertical landscape zones. The name Wanxianshan — literally "Ten Thousand Immortals Mountain" — comes from a beautiful legend that ten thousand immortals once cultivated here. With mist-shrouded peaks and an ethereal atmosphere, the mountain truly feels like a hidden paradise. The scenic area is mainly divided into two zones: Guoliang and Nanping, each offering unique landscapes and cultural charm.
The Guoliang Village zone of Wanxianshan centers on the cliff-hanging road and ancient Taihang village culture. Founded in the late Western Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago, Guoliang Village is perched on a 1,700-meter cliff, earning it the titles "Pearl of the Taihang" and "Village on the Cliff." Its most famous attraction is the Guoliang Cave Cliff-Hanging Road (郭亮洞挂壁公路). Built between 1972 and 1977 by just 13 villagers using hand tools alone — no machinery, no electricity — this 1,250-meter tunnel, 4 meters wide and 5 meters high, features 35 windows of varying sizes carved into the cliff face, offering dizzying views of the 200-plus-meter gorge below. The sheer audacity of hand-carving a road through solid rock astonishes every visitor, earning it a place among the "World's Ten Most Dangerous Roads" and "World's 18 Most Extraordinary Roads." Walking through the tunnel, gazing out through its windows at the abyss below and distant peaks, one cannot help but feel profound respect for the villagers who created this miracle. Inside Guoliang Village, traditional stone-slate houses, stone mills, and stone grinders are well preserved. The ancient tree at the village entrance is centuries old, and the rustic village atmosphere attracts numerous painters and photographers.
The Nanping zone focuses on natural mountain-and-water scenery and represents the scenic essence of Wanxianshan. Known as the "Secluded Fairyland," Nanping's main attractions include Danfen Gorge (丹分沟), Heilongtan Waterfall (黑龙潭瀑布), Mojian Peak (磨剑峰), and Wufeng Mountain Forest Sea (五峰山林海). Danfen Gorge is a deeply incised canyon with towering cliffs on both sides and lush vegetation, its crystal-clear stream flowing along a trail that alternates between dappled sunlight and deep shade — like walking through a natural geological museum. Heilongtan Waterfall, hidden deep in the forest, drops over 30 meters into a jade-green pool surrounded by ancient trees in a serene setting. Mojian Peak is a natural observation platform offering 360-degree panoramic views of Wanxianshan's magnificent landscapes — rolling peaks, churning sea of clouds, and stunning sunrises and sunsets. Nanping Village is the largest administrative village within Wanxianshan, with numerous homestays and farmhouse lodgings, making it the ideal base for exploring the area. Each season offers a different palette: peach blossoms and forsythia blanket the mountains in spring, summer brings cool retreats, autumn ignites with fiery foliage, and winter cloaks everything in silver.
Practical Information: Wanxianshan admission is ¥107, valid for two days. Opening hours: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM. From downtown Xinxiang, take a bus to Huixian then transfer to the scenic shuttle — about 3 hours. By car from Xinxiang: approximately 2.5 hours. Plan 1–2 days; stay at a Nanping Village farmhouse or Guoliang Village homestay (¥100–200/night). The cliff-hanging tunnel is dimly lit — bring a flashlight. Mountain trails are steep; exercise caution, especially on rainy days when surfaces are slippery.
Guoliang Village (郭亮村)
Village on the Cliff World Road MiracleGuoliang Village (郭亮村), under the jurisdiction of Shayao Township in Huixian, sits atop a 1,700-meter Taihang cliff and is one of China's most famous ancient villages. Founded in the late Western Han Dynasty — reportedly named after peasant rebellion leader Guoliang — this tiny village, encircled by sheer cliffs, remained almost completely isolated from the outside world for over two millennia. Villagers could only reach the outside via a "Sky Ladder" (天梯) carved into the cliff face — a nearly vertical path of 720 stone steps barely wide enough for one person, extremely perilous to navigate. This geographic isolation preserved the authentic character of a Taihang mountain village. Stone-slate houses, stone-paved streets, stone mills, and stone grinders are everywhere, while ancient trees, wells, and temples in the village bear witness to centuries of history.
Guoliang Village's greatest achievement is the cliff-hanging road built in the 1970s. In 1972, determined to end generations of isolation, thirteen men from the village, led by Party Secretary Shen Mingxin, began carving a tunnel through 125 meters of solid red-rock cliff using only steel chisels and hammers — no heavy machinery, no electricity. After five grueling years, they completed the 1,250-meter tunnel road, featuring 35 windows that served dual purposes: providing light and ventilation during construction, and as channels for removing debris. Several of the thirteen builders were seriously injured, and some lost their lives during construction. Their sacrifice gave Guoliang a lifeline to the outside world. The feat shocked the nation, earning Guoliang the title "Pearl of the Taihang" and attracting filmmakers. Renowned director Xie Jin shot his film The Bell of Qingliang Temple (《清凉寺的钟声》) here, bringing Guoliang Village to widespread fame.
Today, Guoliang Village has become a nationally renowned tourism destination and film shooting base. The village retains numerous stone-slate buildings — constructed with mountain stone for walls and slate for roofs — naturally cool in summer and warm in winter, embodying the architectural wisdom of Taihang's early inhabitants. The ancient Sky Ladder, though no longer the main passage, is preserved as a historical relic and a challenge for adventurous visitors. Surrounding natural attractions include the Shouting Spring (喊泉), Mandarin Duck Rocks (鸳鸯石), and Honglong Cave (红龙洞), along with cultural facilities like the Film Village and art bases. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year to witness this hand-carved cliff-hanging road miracle and feel the indomitable spirit of the Taihang people. In recent years, Guoliang's homestay economy has flourished, with many villagers converting their stone houses into distinctive lodgings where guests can experience authentic Taihang village life. Standing at the village entrance at dawn, watching the sea of clouds swirl around the Taihang peaks, one marvels at both nature's grandeur and human perseverance.
Practical Information: Guoliang Village is included within the Wanxianshan admission ticket (¥107). From the Wanxianshan entrance, take the scenic shuttle — approximately 30 minutes to Guoliang. The village has dozens of farmhouse stays and homestays (¥80–150/night). We recommend staying at least one night — dawn and dusk offer the best light for photography. Walking through the cliff-hanging tunnel takes about 30 minutes; watch for falling rocks and uneven steps.
Bigan Temple (比干庙)
National Heritage Site Ancestral Shrine of the Lin ClanBigan Temple (比干庙), located 7 km north of Weihui City, was built to commemorate Bigan, the loyal minister of the late Shang Dynasty. With over 1,500 years of history, it stands as a testament to one of China's most celebrated stories of loyalty. Bigan, a nobleman and uncle of the Shang king Zhou, was put to death by having his heart cut out for speaking out against the king's tyranny. After overthrowing the Shang, King Wu of Zhou posthumously honored Bigan as the "National Deity" (国神) and commissioned the construction of a memorial tomb and temple. Subsequent dynasties continually expanded and restored the temple, transforming it into a grand and exquisitely designed sacred site. In 1996, Bigan Temple was designated a National Major Cultural Heritage Protected Unit. It is also recognized as the ancestral shrine of the global Lin (林) clan, since Bigan's son Lin Jian (林坚) was granted the surname Lin by King Wu — the origin of all Lin families worldwide. Every year, Lin descendants from around the globe gather here to trace their roots and pay homage.
Bigan Temple faces south and covers approximately 44,000 square meters, comprising a well-preserved Ming-Qing architectural complex. Along its central axis, the temple features a spirit screen, main gate, second gate, third gate, main hall, and burial mound, flanked by side halls and a stele corridor. The spirit screen is adorned with exquisite brick carvings depicting auspicious symbols like dragons, phoenixes, pines, and cranes. The main hall, the temple's core structure, is five bays wide and three bays deep with a double-eaved gable roof, housing a gilded statue of Bigan alongside murals depicting his life story. Behind the main hall lies Bigan's actual burial mound — a circular tomb approximately 20 meters high and 30 meters in diameter. Before the tomb stands a stone stele inscribed "Tomb of Bigan of Yin" (殷比干莫). Legend holds that Confucius personally wrote the character 莫 (mò) — deliberately omitting the "earth" radical (土) — to express that Bigan had a tomb but no earth to fill it, a poignant tribute to Bigan's tragic fate. The stele corridor preserves over 60 inscriptions spanning from the Northern Wei Dynasty through the Ming and Qing eras, the most precious being Emperor Xiaowen's "Elegy for Bigan" (《吊比干文》) — a masterpiece of Wei Dynasty calligraphy.
Bigan Temple is far more than a historical monument — it is an important symbol of China's culture of loyalty and righteousness. Each year on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month (Bigan's birthday) and during the October temple fair, Lin clan members from home and abroad, along with dignitaries from all walks of life, gather at Bigan Temple for grand ancestral ceremonies and cultural events. The temple fair features folk performances, food exhibitions, and cultural displays in a vibrant atmosphere. The Loyalty and Righteousness Culture Exhibition Hall within the temple uses extensive artifacts, photographs, and recreated scenes to present Bigan's life story and the dynastic honors he received, serving as an inspiring educational venue for patriotism and moral character. Weihui City, where Bigan Temple is located, also offers other historical sites worth visiting, such as Wangjing Tower (望京楼) and Zhenguo Pagoda (镇国塔). In recent years, Weihui has developed the Bigan cultural tourism brand by building a Bigan Culture Plaza and Lin Clan Ancestral Hall, making Bigan Temple an important destination for overseas Chinese tracing their roots and a key cultural tourism brand for Henan Province.
Practical Information: Bigan Temple admission is ¥40. Open 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM; closed on Mondays. From Weihui downtown, take Bus No. 3 — about 15 minutes. From Xinxiang, take a bus to Weihui then transfer — about 40 minutes total. Plan approximately 2 hours for your visit. Guided tours available for about ¥50. During temple fair periods, expect large crowds — consider visiting during off-peak times.
