Guigang

Guigang 贵港 — City of Lotus — Gateway to Guangxi's Interior

Guigang (贵港), known as the "Lotus City" (荷城), sits in the heart of Guangxi at the confluence of the Yu and Yujiang rivers. With over 2,000 years of history, it served as the capital of ancient Guilin Commandery during the Qin Dynasty and has been a crucial trading hub connecting the coast to Guangxi's interior ever since. The city produces more lotus flowers than anywhere else in China, and every summer the wetlands and ponds burst into pink and white bloom.

Beyond its floral fame, Guigang holds a pivotal place in Chinese history. In 1851, Hong Xiuquan launched the Taiping Rebellion from Jintian Village (金田村) just north of the city — the largest peasant uprising in Chinese history, which nearly toppled the Qing Dynasty. The rebellion's birthplace is now a major historical site. Guigang is also the gateway to Guiping (桂平), home to Xishan Mountain (西山), one of China's most sacred Buddhist sites.

Modern Guigang is an industrial city with China's largest thermal power plant and major cement factories, but it has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure. The city serves as an excellent base for exploring central Guangxi — the karst landscapes of Pingtian Mountain, the caves and temples of Xishan, and the historic Taiping sites are all within easy reach. Summer visitors are rewarded with the spectacular lotus blooms that give the city its nickname.

Xishan Mountain Scenic Area

Xishan Mountain 桂平西山

Xishan Mountain (西山, West Mountain) in Guiping is one of China's most sacred Buddhist sites, ranked among the "Seven Famous Buddhist Mountains" (中国佛教七大名山). Jintian Village — Taiping Rebellion Site

Jintian Village 金田起义旧址

Jintian Village (金田村), located 25km north of Guiping, is where Hong Xiuquan launched the Taiping Rebellion on January 11, 1851 — the largest peasant uprising in world history. The rebellion grew to control one-third of China and nearly toppled the Qing Dynasty before being crushed 14 years later. This site is essential for understanding modern Chinese history.

The historic area includes the Jintian Uprising Memorial Hall (金田起义纪念馆) with artifacts, weapons, and exhibits explaining the rebellion's causes and course; the original headquarters building where Hong Xiuquan planned the uprising; and surrounding villages where the God Worshipping Society (拜上帝会) secretly recruited followers. The 50-hectare lake and gardens feature over 100 varieties of lotus and water lily, creating spectacular blooms from June to September when the entire lake turns pink and white. The park is where locals come to exercise, boat, and escape the city heat.

Boardwalks and bridges cross the lotus ponds, allowing close-up views of the flowers. Traditional pavilions, a small zoo, and boat rentals (¥30/hour) round out the attractions. The cliffs reach 300 meters in places, and caves high in the walls contain ancient Yao minority inscriptions. The new Dateng Gorge Water Control Project (大藤峡水利枢纽), completed in 2023, created a massive reservoir and ship locks. The visitor center explains this major infrastructure project.
