Land of Tea, Silk & Lakes - 11 Cities Guide

Zhejiang Province is the heart of Jiangnan culture — a region known for its exquisite natural beauty, historic water towns, and entrepreneurial spirit. Home to West Lake in Hangzhou, the ancient water towns of Wuzhen and Xitang, and the sacred island of Putuoshan, Zhejiang offers 11 prefecture-level cities of remarkable diversity.

Why Visit Zhejiang?

Zhejiang represents the classic postcard image of China — misty mountains reflected in still lakes, ancient arched bridges over sleepy canals, and tiered tea plantations climbing hillsides. This is where Chinese landscape painting comes to life.

Beyond its natural beauty, Zhejiang is one of China's wealthiest and most innovative provinces. Hangzhou is home to Alibaba, the world's largest e-commerce company, and the tech-driven energy of the province sits in fascinating contrast to its ancient water towns and Buddhist mountains.

Hangzhou - Paradise on Earth

Hangzhou (杭州) has been celebrated as "the most beautiful city in China" for over 1,000 years. The centerpiece is West Lake (西湖), a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by temples, pagodas, and gardens. Marco Polo declared it "the finest and most splendid city in the world."

Key experiences include cycling around West Lake (10 km loop), visiting the Lingyin Temple (one of China's most important Buddhist temples), and tasting authentic Longjing tea at the tea plantations of Longjing Village. The evening Impression West Lake light show is spectacular.

Pro Tip: Visit West Lake early (before 8 AM) to experience the mist rising from the water with almost no crowds. The Broken Bridge area at sunrise is magical.

Ningbo - Port City Heritage

Ningbo (宁波) is one of China's oldest trading ports, with over 1,200 years of maritime history. The Tianyi Pavilion (天一阁) is China's oldest surviving private library (built 1561). Putuoshan Island (普陀山), a 40-minute ferry from Ningbo, is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains of China, with stunning coastal temples.

Wenzhou - Entrepreneurial Spirit

Wenzhou (温州) is famous for its business-minded locals and dramatic coastal scenery. The Yandang Mountain (雁荡山) scenic area features sharp granite peaks, waterfalls, and ancient temples. Wenzhou's old town has well-preserved streets with traditional roofed walkways.

Water Towns of Zhejiang

Zhejiang's water towns are among China's finest. Wuzhen (乌镇) is the most famous — divided into east and west sections, the west part is beautifully restored with hotels, museums, and cultural shows. Xitang (西塘) is more intimate, famous for its covered corridors along the water. Both are within 1.5 hours of Hangzhou.

Food Culture

Zhejiang cuisine (Zhejiang cai) is light, fresh, and refined. Dongpo Pork (东坡肉) — braised pork belly named after the poet Su Dongpo — melts in your mouth. West Lake Vinegar Fish (西湖醋鱼) is a Hangzhou signature. Longjing Shrimp (龙井虾仁) combines fresh river shrimp with Longjing tea leaves. And of course, Longjing tea (龙井) itself — China's most famous green tea — must be tasted at source.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May): The best season. West Lake is surrounded by peach and cherry blossoms. Longjing tea harvest season (late March-April).

Autumn (September-November): Clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The osmanthus flowers in Hangzhou fill the air with fragrance.

Summer is hot and humid; winter is damp and cold (often 0-8°C) but West Lake in snow is a famous beauty of its own.

Getting Around Zhejiang

Zhejiang has one of China's best high-speed rail networks. Hangzhou to Shanghai takes just 45 minutes (¥73). Hangzhou to Ningbo: 1 hour. Hangzhou to Wenzhou: 2 hours. The Hangzhou metro system (12 lines) connects all major attractions.
